SEVERAL FIRST-PLACE FINISHES HIGHLIGHT QUAD MEET AT SIENA
FOR THE BULLDOGS
LOUDONVILLE, NY – The Bryant University swim teams returned
to action after the holiday break at the Siena College Quad meet
Sunday afternoon. The men picked up a win over NJIT while the women
earned a pair of wins, knocking off Canisius and NJIT. The Bulldogs
will return home to host Holy Cross this Wednesday evening at 6
pm.
On the women’s side, freshman Molly Smith (Belmont,
Mass.) opened the meet with a first-place finish in the
1000 yard freestyle, finishing in a time of 10:46.86, a good four
seconds ahead of Siena’s Bethany Fried (10:56.62). Smith
would also take first in the 200 individual medley in 2:12.51 and
later place first in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.74.
Classmate Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.)
was second in the 50 free in 25.47 and third in the 100 yard
butterfly in 1:01.37, but did come through in the 100 yard
backstroke as the freshman standout took home first-place in a time
of 58.87. Jill Squillante (Sayville, NY) was
fourth in the 100 back in 1:06.77 while Cassy Fostik
(Neshanic Station, NJ) was close behind in seventh in
1:08.61.
In one of the most exciting finishes of the day, Kim Carballeira
(East Setauket, NY) edged Fried by the narrowest of margins in the
500 free. Carballeira touched in a time of 5:23.11, just ahead of
Fried who came in at 5:23.67. Senior Jess Looney
(Goffstown, NH) was fifth in the race in 5:34.86 while
Amy Howell (Clifton Park, NY) was eighth while
Emily Hayes (Marshfield, Mass.)
was ninth.
Sophomore Alex Kosenski (Lavalette, NJ) had a big
day for the men. The sophomore took top honors in the 200 freestyle
in 1:48.93 with teammate Matt Derwin (Cheshire,
Conn.) fourth in 1:56.19. Kosenski would later add a first
in the 100 free in 48.68, winning by nearly two seconds.
Teammate Steve Nquyen (San Jose, Calif.) also
enjoyed a tremendous day for the Bulldogs. The junior standout
captured first in the men’s 100 butterfly in a time of 54.12
and would later take top honors in the 500 free in 4:59.20, just a
fraction of a second ahead of runner up Robby Novak of Canisius who
clocked in at 4:59.60.
The men were also strong in the 100 backstroke as Kevin
McDonald (North Haven, Conn.) and Steve Sinclair
(Middletown, Mass.) finished first and second
respectively. McDonald touched the wall in 56.01, just ahead of
Sinclair who was not far behind in 57.82.
