Schulte wins gold in the 200 IM, Bulldogs set two more records on day two of MAACs

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore Ben Schulte (Tumon, Guam) took home gold in the 200 IM and the Bryant University men's swimming and diving team set two more school records on day two of the MAAC Championships at Erie Community College.

The Bulldogs are currently in third place after two days with 175 points. Rider leads the way with 330 points and Marist is in second 191 points.

Schulte won the 200 IM for the second-straight season, pacing the field with a time of 1:49.49. Freshman Tavish Boyle (Springfield, N.J.) also finaled in the event, finishing eighth with a time of 1:55.72.

Bryant's first school record of the day came from sophomore Colin Curtin (Wethersfield, Conn.). Curtin broke the 500 free record in the prelims before shattering it in the finals, finishing sixth with a new record time of 4:32.70.

The second school record came from Bryant's 200 free relay team of Zachary Hannon (Marlborough, Conn.), Benon Boyadjian (Middlebury, Conn.), Boris Paraliticci (Saunderstown, R.I.) and George Sommerville (Pittsfield, Mass.). The quartet swam to a silver medal with a school-record time of 1:23.32.

Individually, the Bulldogs had five others earn finals appearances. Hannon finished seventh in the 50 free with a time of 21.26, while Sommerville (10th, 21.18) and Boyadjian (14th, 21.38) made the "B" final. Freshmen Kevin Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn.) and Ryan Sheehy (West Newbury, Mass.) finished 12-13 in the 1 meter dive. Sullivan posted 203.80 points and Sheehy posted 181.05 points.

The MAAC Championships continue on Friday with preliminary events beginning at 10:00 a.m.
