Bryant sets new school record in 200 freestyle relay, sit fourth after Day 2

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After a pair of silver medals in the finals of Day 2, the Bryant University men's swimming and diving team currently sits fourth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships with two days still to go.

Coach Cameron's Comments

"We had an awesome day two. There were a lot of great swims by our guys tonight. That last relay was incredible, setting a school record and an incredible final split by Benon [Boyadjian]. I'm really looking forward to what Day 3 has in store for us."

Prelims Highlights

  • The Bulldogs had six athletes in total reach A Finals, with two in the 500 free, two in the 200 IM and two in the 3-meter dive.
  • Senior Colin Curtin (Wethersfield, Conn.) and junior Oliver French (Nashua, N.H.) each made it to the A-final of the 500 free. Curtin finished with a time of 4:38.42, while French clocked in at 4:35.94.
  • Senior Ben Schulte (Tumon, Guam) led all preliminary swimmers in the 200 IM, swimming the race in 1:50.19. Junior Tavish Boyle (Springfield, N.J.) finished in 1:52.98.
  • Both Trevor Hazlewood (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Kevin Sullivan (East Lyme, Conn.) qualified for the A final in the 3-meter dive, with Hazlewood scoring a 266.25 and Sullivan finishing with a 246.10.

Finals Results

  • Curtin finished fourth in the 500 free (4:35.55), while French was able to snag seventh for the Bulldogs (4:36.68).
  • Schulte won one of the Bulldogs' two silver medals on the night in the 200 IM (1:48.77). Boyle finished the event sixth (1:52.69).
  • Hazlewood was able to secure a Top 5 finish for the Black and Gold in the 3-meter (288.30), besting his prelims score by 20 points. Sullivan snagged eighth (249.10).
  • To finish off the night, the Bulldogs' 200 free relay team of freshmen Andrew Allen (Bedford, N.H.) and Matthew Mays (St. Croix, Virgin Islands), sophomore Juan Gonzalez (Al Safa, Dubai) and senior Benon Boyadjian (Middlebury, Conn.) set a new school record in the 200 free relay (1:21.73), earning the team's second silver medal in the night's final event.

Stats and Notables

  • Schulte's 200 IM time qualified him for his second NCAA "B" cut of the meet.
  • The Bulldogs' relay bested the school record by 1.59 seconds.
  • Boyadjian's final split of the 200 free relay clocked in at 19.69.
  • Bryant (50 points behind first) sit the closest to the top after two days than they ever have at the meet.
  • The Black and Gold also sit just a half point behind Canisius for second and 47 points behind Marist for second.
