Bryant earns 18 wins to get fifth straight overall victory at WPI

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant University men's swimming & diving team in combination with the women's team won their fifth straight Gompei Invitational with a score of 8051.5. The Bulldogs beat the second place WPI by 2500 points.

During the three day event, the Black and Gold secured 18 victories to assist in taking home the overall win. Freshmen James Misto and Jason Yi combined for five wins while the relay team tacked on four as well. Leo Luna also picked up three of those victories in the freestyle events.

Notes and Notables

Day 1

  • The squad kicked off the weekend with a victory in the 200 yard medley relay from the A Team (Griffin Lajoie, Gustav Persson, James Misto, and Conner Lofstrom). That group raced a 1:31.64 to secure the win. The B Team came in fourth at 1:34.53 while the C Team tied the Babson B Team for seventh at 1:36.96.
  • In the 200 yard IM, four Bulldogs had top 10 finishes. Persson came in third with a 1:55.95, Lajoie placed fourth at 1:56.56, Roman San Juan took fifth with a 1:57.25, and Jack Ferguson placed seventh with his time of 1:58.64.
  • James Misto won the 50 yard freestyle by laying down a 20.67. His time was only .25 seconds shy of the team record. Lofstrom's 21.47 in the event tied him for seventh with a swimmer from Bentley.
  • Leo Luna won the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 4:35.42, which was his best time in a final this season for the event. Griffen Schimmel took fourth after swimming a 4:45.54. Roman San Juan took seventh with a 4:49.34 and Aiden Acuna placed tenth with a 4:54.27
  • Freshman Jason Yi picked up his first collegiate win with his victory in the 200 yard breaststroke. Yi's  time of 2:02.53 was nine seconds better than his mark in the preliminary round. Persson was right behind Yi at 2:03.85 for the squad's first 1-2 finish of the weekend. Persson also improved from the preliminary race, decreasing his time by four seconds in the finals. Ferguson and Aidan Trenery round out the top 10 with their fifth (2:07.26) and eighth (2:13.39) place finishes.
  • 100 yard fly Misto snagged his second win of the weekend by racing to a 48.87 in the 100 yard butterfly. Freshman Tim Andrews took sixth by swimming a 51.25 and Lajoie grabbed tenth at 52.28.
  • To round out the day, the 800 yard freestyle relay Team A (Lofstrom, Luna, Lajoie, Chase Konstantakos) took a victory with their time of 6:56.20, a seven second improvement from preliminaries. The B Team placed fourth in the race with a 7:07.34.

Day 2

  • To start the second day, Team A (Lofstrom, Alex Rowson, Reese Stevenson, Misto) swam to a 1:24.26 and picked up the victory in the 200 yard freestyle relay. The B Team picked up an eighth place finish with their time of 1:27.14.
  • In the 400 yard IM, San Juan grabbed his first win of the season by laying down a 4:10.85. Andrew Gamper followed that up with a 4:12.30, good for a third place finish.
  • Lajoie was back to his winning ways on Saturday and grabbed the victory in the 100 yard backstroke. Lajoie swam a  50.17 in the event. Jack Ossi took the five spot in the race after swimming a 53.44.
  • Misto continued to demonstrate his dominance as a sprinter by winning the 50 yard fly with a time of 21.84. Reese Stevenson, T. Andrews, and Brandon Naylor backed up Misto with third (23.14), fourth (23.21), and sixth (23.38) place rankings.
  • Luna grabbed another win on the weekend by racing a 1:41.68 in the 200 yard freestyle. Konstantakos swam a 1:44.31 for seventh and Rowson a 1:49.36 for tenth in the race as well.
  • Ossi placed fourth in the 50 yard backstroke with his time of 25.50.
  • Jason Yi picked up yet another win by racing a 56.31 in the 100 yard breaststroke. Persson took third at 56.92, Jack Ferguson grabbed ninth with a 58.49, and Lofstrom placed tenth at 59.35.

Day 3

  • In the 400 yard medley relay, the A and B teams went 1-2. Team A (Lajoie, Yi, Misto, Lofstrom) won with a time of 3:25.19 and Team B (San Juan, Persson, T. Andrews, and Rowson) raced to a time of 3:27.44.
  • Loftsrom picked up a victory in the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 45.99.
  • Lajoie took the 200 yard backstroke race at 1:50.78. Ossi backed him up with a second place finish at 1:53.46. San Juan grabbed the four spot with a time of 1:56.19.
  • In the 100 yard IM, Lofstrom snagged second with a time of 52.69.
  • Gamper won his first event of the season in the 200 yard butterfly with a time of 1:52.89. T. Andrews was right behind him with a 1:54.23 for second place. Brandon Naylor also finished fourth in the race at 1:56.65.
  • Persson picked up his first victory of the weekend in the 50 yard breaststroke. He raced a 26.10 in that event. Yi finished fourth with a 26.42 and Rowson took fifth at 26.85.
  • Luna swam a 15:57.11 in the 1650 yard freestyle to take the win. Schimmel and Christian Pereira took seventh (16:46.35) and ninth (16:53.88), respectively.
  • To end the weekend, the 400 yard free relay Team A (Persson, Misto, Konstantakos, Lofstrom) took second with a time of 3:06.36 and Team B placed seventh with a 3:11.91.

Next Up

The Black and Gold won't compete as a full team again until the new year when they make the trip to UMass on January 6th.
