Vogt, Morris lead Bulldogs to strong weekend at Yale, Brown

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Another busy weekend and more strong performances from the Bryant University men's tennis team at the Yale Shoot Out and the Brown Invitational on Saturday and Sunday.

At the Yale Shoot Out, senior Zachary Morris (Garden City, N.Y.) continued to establish himself as a force to be reckoned with at No. 1 singles, upping his overall record to 10-0 after a flawless 3-0 performance in New Haven, Conn.

At Yale's dual-style tournament, the Bulldogs battled against top players from St. Bonaventure, Army, and Yale. Against the Bonnies, Bryant thrived sweeping all eight singles spots and two of four doubles matches, before splitting both the singles and doubles events with Army.

"To split with Army was exciting," said Bryant head coach Ron Gendron. "Both teams fought very hard and it was a pleasure to see our guys do battle with our nation's future heroes.  The top-level fitness and intensity displayed by both teams was off the charts; to compete at that level was a very proud moment for us."

The Black and Gold wrapped up play taking two of seven singles contests from the host Bulldogs, with the wins coming from Morris and junior Max Vogt (Fair Oaks, Calif.), who also enjoyed a perfect 3-0 day on the singles court.

"To then come back and be competitive with a team like Yale was even more impressive," added Gendron. "Zack Morris has emerged as this year's leader and I could not be more pleased."

At the Brown Invitational, sophomore Christian Duarte (Dallas, Texas) picked up quality wins over Aziz from Boston College and Lakshmanan of Buffalo to lead the Bulldogs with a 2-1 weekend in singles.

In doubles action, Duarte and partner John Templeman (Midland, Mich.) were equally impressive, earning victories over Andersson/Lakshmanan (Buffalo), 6-4, and Aziz/Melvin (BC), 8-5.

Looking ahead, the Black and Gold will return to the court over the weekend when they host the Bryant Invitational and compete at the Bean Pot Invitational in Cambridge, Mass.
