Morris, Kuhar close fall season with strong showing at ITAs

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's tennis team closed out its fall competition with a strong show at the ITA Regionals over the weekend in Flushing, N.Y.

Freshman Matt Kuhar (Smithfield, R.I.) and senior Zachary Morris (Garden City, N.Y.) each advanced to the sound round of the main singles draws, knocking off quality opponents in the process.

In qualifying action, Kuhar knocked off a pair of quality Ivy League opponents in Cornell's Alex Sidney, 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Brown's Peter Tarwid, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4, to earn a spot in the main draw. In the man singles field, Kuhar continued his run, taking down Ismael Dinia (Binghamton), 7-6, 6-2, before eventually falling to a very tough opponent, Vermeer of Columbia, 6-4, 7-5.

Morris, who was automatically entered in the main draw, took down Army's Alex Van Veltzer in straight-sets, 6-4, 6-4, before falling to Del Nunzio of St. John's in the second round, 6-3, 6-3.

"This was a great way to wrap up our fall with a solid effort at the ITAs," said Bryant head coach Ron Gendron. "Kuhar looked strong beating three talented players before losing a tough one to a great player from Columbia.

"We have a lot of work to do in preparation for the spring season, but we looking forward to the challenge of defending our NEC Title and playing as many quality opponents as possible along the way."
