Bulldogs finish 1-1 against MIT and Brown

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's tennis team split games on Friday and Monday, defeating MIT, 5-2, in Cambridge, before falling to Brown, 4-0, in Providence.

The Bulldogs (4-6) were able to string together two-straight wins after trumping the Engineers (1-1), 5-2, on Friday. The Black and Gold won the doubles point with the Bryant pair of senior Max Vogt (Fair Oaks, Calif.) and sophomore Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.), taking down MIT's Kevin Wang and Alex Cauneac, 6-3, before the duo of senior Richard Sipala (Quogue, N.Y.) and junior Corey DiPaolo (Lincoln, R.I.) trumped Henry La Soya and Bryan Lilley, 6-4.

After MIT took the first two singles matches, Bryant won out the remaining four. Freshman Michael Plutt (Weston, Fla.) won Bryant its first point in singles play, defeating Tyler Barr, 7-6, 6-4. Classmate Artur Jakubowski (Dallas, Texas) followed suit, edging out Sean Ko in three games, 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4). Sophomore Jorge Ortiz-Garcia (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) took down Henry La Soya, 6-2, 6-1, while freshman Scott Plutt (Weston, Fla.) was victorious over Dennis Garcia, 6-3, 6-1.

In a tough in-state matchup, the Bulldogs fell to Brown, 4-0, with three matches going unfinished. The only match victory the Bulldogs found was in doubles play, as Michael Plutt and sophomore Nick Lamart (Raleigh, N.C.) beat Charles Tan and Jack Haworth, 6-4, in the No. 1 doubles slot. The Bryant pair of Ortiz-Garcua and Lorenz battled hard but were conquered, 6-4, by Mladen Mitak and Aaron Sandberg.

Lorenz, Ortiz-Garcia and junior Oliver Welsh's (San Diego, Calif.) matches all went unfinished in singles play, while Michael Plutt found the closest margin, losing to Haworth, 6-3, 6-2, in the No. 3 singles spot.

The Bulldogs continue to face Ivy League competitors, taking on Yale on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 11 a.m. and return to Cambridge to battle Harvard on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 4 p.m.
