Bulldogs sweep Hawks, 7-0, Sunday, on the road

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's tennis team found their first sweep of the season, defeating Hartford, 7-0, on Sunday in Guilford.

Senior Max Vogt (Fair Oaks, Calif.) got things started for the Bulldogs (5-9) in singles play, defeating Daniel Rombola in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. The Hawks' (1-11) William Drumwright battled junior Oliver Welsh (San Diego, Calif.) to a third game in the No. 2 singles slot, before Welsh came away with the win, finishing, 6-2, 3-6, 6-1. Sophomore Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) followed suit, trumping Bryan Einstoss, 6-3, 6-1, while freshman Michael Plutt (Weston, Fla.) took down Juan Molina, 6-4, 6-1. Freshman Artur Jakubowski (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Jorge Ortiz-Garcia (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) earned the final two singles points, as Jakubowski defeated his adversary, 6-4, 6-0, and Ortiz-Garcia held his opponent scoreless, winning, 6-0, 6-0.

The Black and Gold earned the doubles point, after sweeping the Hawks in doubles competition. The Bryant pair of sophomore Nick Lamart (Raleigh, N.C.) and Michael Plutt edged by Hartford's Rombola and Montes, 6-4. The No. 2 doubles match resulted in Ortiz-Garcia and sophomore Josh Kliger (Newport Beach, Calif.) overpowering Einstoss and Drumwright, 6-2. The twosome of junior Joe Sterrey (Newnan, Ga.) and classmate Corey DiPaolo (Lincoln, R.I.) completed the sweep, as they finished, 6-2, over Harrison Max and Molina.

"Hartford is a well coached group of young men who deserve a better fate than to be cut," said head coach Ron Gendron.

Next, the Bulldogs turn their attention to Northeast Conference play, as they host Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, March 26 at 2 p.m.
