Bulldogs sweep NEC competitors over the weekend, defeat Pioneers and Seahawks, 7-0, respectively

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's tennis team moves to 3-0 in Northeast Conference play, shutting out Sacred Heart and Wagner, 7-0, respectively, on Saturday and Sunday.

Saturday

The Bulldogs (9-11, 3-0 NEC) hosted the Pioneers (8-13, 2-2) on Saturday, sweeping the visitors in all three doubles matches to take the 1-0 advantage. Sophomore Nick Lamart (Raleigh, N.C.) and freshman Michael Plutt (Weston, Fla.) won in No. 1 doubles, 6-3, and sophomores Josh Kliger (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Jorge Ortiz-Garcia (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) paired up to win by the same margin No. 3 doubles. Senior Max Vogt (Fair Oaks, Calif.) and sophomore Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) trumped the Pioneers' No. 2 doubles team, 6-1.

Vogt carried his doubles' success into singles play, defeating Brian Power 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) in No. 1 singles. The rest of the team went on to defeat their adversaries in two sets, including junior Oliver Welsh's (San Diego, Calif.), 6-3, 6-3, victory over Matt Dean in No. 2 singles. Plutt overpowered Karan Narula, 6-2, 6-3, in No. 4 singles and classmate Artur Jakubowski (Dallas, Texas) took down his competition, 6-2, 6-4, in No. 5 singles.

Sunday

The Bulldogs traveled to play the Seahawks (7-12, 1-4), finding their third-straight conquest, as they outplayed Wagner, 7-0. The Black and Gold earned the doubles point, winning 2-of-3 matches, including Vogt and Lorenz's, 6-1, No. 2 doubles victory and Kliger and Ortiz-Garcia's, 6-3, No. 3 doubles success.

Wagner's Dale Sandy batted Vogt into a tiebreak in the second set in No. 1 singles, but the senior held out to beat Sandy, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). Welsh dominated in No. 2 singles, moving past Ilya Kneppelhout, 6-0, 6-1. Eric Poland won the first set in No. 3 singles, 6-4, but Lorenz bounced back to win the last two sets, 6-0, 6-4. After a close first set, 7-6 (7-1), Plutt defeated Charlton Boyd, 6-4, in the second set to seal the No. 4 singles point. Jakubowski and Ortiz-Garcia followed suit, sealing Bryant's 7-0 victory in No. 5 and No. 6 singles.
