Bulldogs go 1-3 over the weekend, edge out NJIT, 4-3

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Following a four-match weekend, the Bryant University men's tennis team found one win over NJIT, 4-3, but suffered losses to St. John's, 4-0, Army, 4-1, and Stony Brook, 4-0.

The Bulldogs (5-7) kicked off the New York tour at St. John's. The Red Storm captured the doubles point after finding 6-3 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. The Bryant duo of redshirt-sophomore Matt Kuhar (Smithfield, R.I.) and junior Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won by the same margin at No. 1 doubles. Three matches went unfinished in singles play, after the Red Storm collected points at No. 2, 3 and 5.

The Black and Gold took on Army the following morning, scoring their only point at No. 6 singles when senior Oliver Welsh (San Diego, Calif.) defeated Nikita Pereverzin, 6-4, 6-2. Kuhar and junior Jorge Ortiz-Garcia's (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) went unfinished at No. 1 and No. 5 singles.

Bryant also faced NJIT and Stony Brook at Army, finding its only win over the weekend over the Highlanders, 4-3. The Bulldogs secured the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Kuhar and Ortiz-Garcia won, 6-4, at No. 1, while freshmen Guido Argentini (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Jorge Isaias Ortiz-Garcia (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) took down Richard Rangga and Pablo Arrutia, 7-6, at No.3.

Kuhar topped Lucas Zvikas, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles, while Welsh trumped Pablo Arrutia, 7-5, 6-1. Sophomore Artur Jakubowski (Dallas, Texas) clinched the win for the Bulldogs, defeating Rangga in three games, 6-7 (3), 6-4, 7-6 (2).

In the final match of the weekend, Stony Brook swept the Bulldogs, 4-0. The Seawolves took the doubles point at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Argentini and Ortiz-Garcia held Hari Rohan and Richie Agarwal scoreless, 6-0, at No. 3 doubles.

Threee singles matches went unfinished, including Kuhar's 6-4, 3-3 edge at No. 1. Stony Brook went on to take the match, scoring points at No. 2, 3 and 6 singles.

Next up for the Bulldogs is a weekend trip to the Garden State to take on Princeton and Buffalo at Princeton.
