Bulldogs dominate Mount in NEC opener

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University men's tennis team opened Northeast Conference play with a dominant, 6-1, win over Mount St. Mary's on Friday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (6-10, 1-0 NEC) took an early, 1-0, edge over the Mount (1-9, 0-2) after sweeping the doubles points. The No. 1 doubles pair of Matt Kuhar (Smithfield, R.I.) and Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) won, 6-2, while partners Michael Plutt (Weston, Fla.) and Artur Jakubowski (Dallas, Texas) were victorious by the same margin at No. 3 doubles. Josh Kliger (Newport Beach, Calif.) and Jorge Ortiz-Garcia (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico) teamed up to take down Jean Armstrong and Zachary Burau, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles.

Kuhar continued his success in singles play, defeating Mateo DeSomocurcio, 6-3, 7-5, at No .1. Lorenz and M. Plutt both won convincingly at No. 2 and No. 4 singles, respectively, winning, 6-4, 6-2. Louis Tonon forced a third game at No. 3 singles, but Jakubowski bounced back to earn the point in the third, 6-4.

Peter Landis scored the Mount's only point in the match, taking down Oliver Welsh (San Diego, Calif.) in three games, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Scott Plutt (Weston, Fla.) topped Jean Armstrong, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 6 singles, as the Bulldogs defeated the Mount, 6-1, in their first NEC match of the season.

The Bulldogs turn their attention next to Columbia, taking on the Lions on Sunday at noon in New York.
