Bulldogs fall, 5-2, to Amherst on Senior Day

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Following a 7-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Saturday, the Bryant University men's tennis team fell to Amherst College, 5-2, on Senior Day on Sunday.

Amherst (13-3, 1-1 NESCAC) recorded the doubles point, earning wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles, including Sam Silver and Jon Heidenberg's victory over Bryant's senior pair of Joe Sterrey (Newnan, Ga.) and Corey DiPaola (Lincoln, R.I.) at No. 3 doubles. Redshirt sophomore Matt Kuhar (Smithfield, R.I.) and junior Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) teamed up to defeat Zach Bessette and Josh Marchalik, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles.

The Bulldogs (8-12, 3-0 NEC) scored their two points of the match at No. 1 and 3 singles, as freshman Guido Argentini (Boca Raton, Fla.) won, 6-2, 7-5, at one and sophomore Scott Plutt (Weston, Fla.) was successful at three, 3-6, 7-5, 2-5, before the match was retired.

Senior Oliver Welsh (San Diego, Calif.) was overcome by Bessette, 6-2, 7-5, at No. 2 singles, while classmate John Templeman (Midland, Mich.) fell at No. 6 singles, 7-5, 6-3.

"We lost but it was great day," said head coach Ron Gendron. "I am thankful for my seniors."

The Bulldogs will split up Friday with part of the team traveling to face Quinnipiac at 1 p.m., while others stay in Smithfield to host Boston University at noon.
