Bulldogs four-peat in NEC Championship, defeat Red Flash, 4-1

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. – Bryant University men's tennis has become one of only four teams in Northeast Conference history to win four-straight league titles after taking down Saint Francis U., 4-1, on Sunday afternoon in the Garden State.

The Bulldogs (12-13, 4-0 NEC) claimed the doubles point, capturing wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles. Redshirt sophomore Matt Kuhar (Smithfield, R.I.) and junior Luke Lorenz (Colorado Springs, Colo.) paired up to take Dylan Foo-Kune and Rodrigo Tico, 6-3, at one. After the Black and Gold dropped the match at No. 2 doubles, sophomores Michael Plutt (Weston, Fla.) and Artur Jakubowski (Dallas, Texas) took care of business at three, winning, 6-4.

Kuhar pushed the Bulldogs' lead to two, 2-0, after defeating Foo-Kune, 6-3, 6-0, at No. 1 singles. The redshirt sophomore came out strong, before surrendering three games to Foo-Kune. Kuhar kept his composure, pulling out the first set win, before silencing Foo-Kune in the second.

Last season, Plutt sealed the Bulldogs' third-straight NEC Title at No. 4 singles and this year he contributed again, giving the Bulldogs a 3-0 lead after capturing the point at five, 7-5, 6-3.

The Red Flash (15-5, 4-0) pulled within two, 3-1, after Franz Luna dealt Lorenz a blow in two games, 7-6, 6-3.

Last season, it was a freshman at No. 4 singles that sealed the victory, and this year was no different as rookie Guido Argentini (Boca Raton, Fla.) took down Tico, 6-4, 6-4, at four. Tico pulled himself back into the second set, tying the match, 4-4, but the lefty grinded it out to win in straight sets and seal the Bulldogs' fourth-straight NEC Championship.

The conference title gives the Bulldogs an automatic bid in the NCAA Tournament and they will await the selection show on Tuesday, May 2, to find out their opposition.
