Bulldogs head on California tour, begin at LMU Tournament

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team heads to the Golden State to play in a series of tournaments over Spring Break, beginning with the LMU Tournament in which the Bulldogs will face five teams from around the country over the course of the three days.

The Bulldogs (1-9) enter the weekend tournament on a seven-game losing streak after having dropped all five last weekend at the Citrus Classic 2 in Orlando, Fla. The Black and Gold recorded their only win of the season after edging out Cleveland St., 2-1, at the ECU Pirate Clash in Greenville, N.C.

Bryant has been struggling offensively, batting just .186 as a team. The Bulldogs have scored three runs or less in all but one game, in which they put up five against East Carolina. Senior Haylee Haas (Moorpark, Calif.) has been performing well at the plate, batting .375, while averaging a .458 slugging percentage. The outfielder has totaled four runs off nine hits and three RBI.

Red-shirt sophomore Logan Paul (Shaker Heights, Ohio) leads the Bulldogs bullpen with a 2.93 ERA. The righty pitcher has totals four strikeouts, while sophomore Colby Norris (Toano, Va.) leads the staff with 12.

Friday

The Bulldogs begin the LMU Tournament against fellow Northeasterner Quinnipiac on Friday, March 8, at 11 a.m. The Bobcats (3-5) enter the tournament on a three-game losing streak, winning most recently against Eastern Michigan, 4-3. The Bobcats are 2-2 in morning games and 0-1 against New England teams, having lost, 8-1, to Boston University.

Miranda Magana leads the Bobcats offensively in nearly every category, batting .481, and enters Friday's game on an eight-game hitting streak. Keilani Finley is second to Magana at .444. Abbey Long is 1-2 on the season in the circle, posting a 2.80 ERA. Magana also leads the Bobcats with a .941 fielding percentage from third base, totaling 15 putouts and 17 assists. First baseman Keala Cordeiro leads the defense with 48 putouts, posting a .925 fielding percentage.  

The Bulldogs continue play on Friday against the Lions (5-9), beginning at 1:30 p.m. The Lions are 4-6 at neutral sites and 1-5 in their last five games. The team is led offensively by Irma Sanchez, who bats .333 and Caitlin Harmin, who is averaging .300. Hannah Bandimere leads the staff at 4-3 in the circle, while posting a 3.12 ERA. Third baseman Alicia Brown remains perfect in the field, posting a team-best 28 assists, while infielder leads the Lions with 122 putouts.

Saturday

The Black and Gold begin Saturday with an 11 a.m. game against the Roadrunners (2-10), who are 0-5 at neutral sites and 0-1 in morning games. Maddi Clark leads the offense, batting .346, while Josie Flores averages .333. Summer Evans posts the team's best ERA at 3.53, sitting 2-4 on the season. Outfielder Kaylynn Burt holds a perfect fielding percentage, while totaling 20 putouts and one assist. Utility player Chris Hipa leads the team with 24 assists and despite four errors, first baseman Nicole Curry leads the team with 97 putouts.

The Bulldogs face off against the Broncs of Boise St. (12-5) on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Broncs enter on a two-game winning streak and are 9-4 at neutral sites. Rebekah Cervantes heads the offense, batting .489, while Makenzie Sullivan averages .458. Christina Washington posts a team-best 1.97 ERA and is 6-3 in the circle this season, while Kelsey Broadus is 2-0, posting a 2.38 ERA. Infielder Makenzie Sullivan leads the team with 99 putouts and six assists.

Sunday

Bryant wraps up the LMU Tournament with a matchup against No. 5 Arizona. The Wildcats (18-1) enter on a three-game losing streak, most recently sweeping Texas in a three-game series. Arizona is 4-1 at neutral sites, dropping their only loss of the season, 1-0, to No. 1 Florida State. Earlier in the season, the Wildcats defeated fellow NEC team LIU Brooklyn, 21-2, in 5 innings.

The Wildcats are led by Dejah Mulipola and Mo Mercado, who bat .510 and .481, respectively. Danielle O'Toole is 10-1 on the season, posting an impressive 0.51 ERA. O'Toole is backed by Taylor McQuillin, who boasts a 1.12 ERA and a 4-0 record in the circle. Mulipola, the catcher, leads the team with 134 putouts and a perfect fielding percentage. Infielder Jessie Harper totals 102 putouts and 12 assists.
