UMBC, Maryland Invitational on deck for Bulldogs

COLLEGE PARK, MD. – The Bryant University softball team heads to College Park, Md. to compete in the Maryland Invitational beginning Friday, March 15 at 10 a.m. against Drexel. The Bulldogs will put the Maryland Invitational on pause as the Black and Gold breaks for a single game against UMBC during game two on Saturday, before resuming on Sunday, closing out the Invitational with Saint Peter's.

SERIES HISTORY

  • In 2012, the Bulldogs met with both Saint Peters and Maryland in Florida. During the Florida Rebel Games, Bryant topped Saint Peters in its only meeting in history, 7-3. The Bulldogs then went to the USF Tournament and shocked Maryland, 6-4, in its one and only meeting.
  • This weekend will mark the first time in history that the Black and Gold has met with both UMBC and Drexel.  

SCOUTING THE FIELD

  • Drexel comes into the Maryland Invitational posting a record of 6-9 after going 2-3 at the Hampton Blue and White Classic hosted by Hampton University. As a team, the Dragons lead the Colonial Athletic Association in batting average (.315), OBP (.404) and scoring (5.80). Sophomore Kristi DiMeo leads the Dragons with a .472 batting average, posting 25 hits including four doubles and nine home runs on the year. DiMeo also leads the country with 1.73 RBIs per game.
  • The tournament host, Maryland, is currently 12-11 falling most recently to UT Martin at the Stetson Invitational in Deland, Fla. The Terps are led by freshman Taylor Okada, who leads the BIG10 with 35 hits and three triples so far on the season. Sydney Golden leads Maryland in the circle with a win-loss record of 8-4 with 32 strikeouts across 75 innings.
  • UMBC enters the weekend, 6-8, after being swept by Towson. The Retrievers' strengths lie in their pitchers with freshman Courtney Coppersmith leading the way with 97 strikeouts across just 58 innings. Coppersmith leads the America East in strikeouts, shutouts (3) and strikeouts per seven innings (11.5), and is second in the conference with a 1.82 ERA.
  • The Peacock of Saint Peter's post a 3-10 record after topping Howard, 7-3, in game two of its doubleheader. Junior Alina Guevera posts a .324 batting average batting 11-for-34 on the year with two doubles and nine RBIs.

NOTES AND NOTABLES  

  • The Bulldogs enter the weekend after enduring a doubleheader with No. 16 South Carolina, dropping to a 1-17 record.
  • Freshman Toni Camarillo (Corona, Calif.) now leads the Bulldogs with 15 hits, three doubles and four RBIs.
  • Adriana Sanchez (Clyde, Ohio) made her debut in the circle during game two at Coastal Carolina.
  • Sarah McKeveny (Bohemia, N.Y.) and Colby Norris (Toano, Va.) lead the Black and Gold with 36 combined strikeouts. Norris posted a season-high six strikeouts against NC Stats during the Charleston Invitational.
