Bryant visits Providence Tuesday afternoon

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team takes the short trip to Providence College on Tuesday, March 26 for a single-game showdown at 3 p.m.

SERIES HISTORY

  • Tuesday marks the tenth all-time meeting between the two teams, having met or scheduled to meet almost every year in Bryant's Division I era.
  • The Bulldogs are 1-8- against the Friars with their only win coming in April of 2012. Bryant defeated Providence, 9-6.  

SCOUTING THE FRIARS

  • Providence posts a 15-12 overall record. Most recently, the Friars went 1-3 in its first Big East match up with St. Johns.
  • The Friars rely on freshman pitcher Daniela Alvarez who leads the Big East in three categories; Earned Run Average (1.40), Strikeout-to-Walk Ratio (4.67) and Walks Allowed Per Seven Innings (1.20). Alvarez has pitched 78.2 innings this season, compiling 63 strikeouts and 13 walks.
  • Emma Lee leads the Friars on the offensive end with a batting average of .403, ranking her second in the Big East. Lee is also one of Providence's leaders in RBIs with 12.
  • Jill Karwoski leads the Friars in her first year as head coach. Karwoski comes to PC from Quinnipiac where she also served as head coach.

BULLDOGS NOTES AND NOTABLES

  • The Bulldogs are currently 4-22 after splitting at the Stony Brook Invitational over the weekend, 2-2. Bryant swept Fairfield in weekend play allowing the Stags just three runs across two games.
  • Senior Kaleigh Goulart (Marion, Mass.) brought in four runs over the weekend. She now leads the team with 10 RBIs.
  • Junior Gabrielle Ermish (Pottstown, Pa.) notched a new season-high of six strikeouts and no walks to help the Bulldogs top Fairfield, 7-2, for Ermish's first win of the season.
  • Sarah McKeveny (Bohemia, N.Y.) also had a successful weekend in the circle. In game two against Fairfield, McKeveny did not walk a single batter while tossing a full seven innings, and gave up just four hits.
  • Freshman Carlyn Hernandez (Cypress, Calif.) led the Black and Gold at the plate with a .375 weekend batting average. Hernandez compiled back-to-back doubles against Stony Brook, marking the first set of doubles of her collegiate career.

Bryant comes home to Conaty Park this weekend for a pair of double headers against Northeast Conference foes. Conference play will begin this Saturday, March 30 against Saint Francis U at 1 and 3 p.m.
