Bulldogs hit the road for Mount, CCSU

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University softball team hits the road for a weekend packed with Northeast Conference competition. The Bulldogs make their first stop in Emmitsburg, Md. for a doubleheader with Mount St. Mary's before making their way back up north to meet with Central Connecticut on Saturday.

SERIES HISTORY

  • The all-time series is tied at nine apiece between the Bulldogs and the Mountaineers. Mount St. Mary's swept the Bulldogs last season to even the series, 5-1, and, 7-4.
  • Bryant trails the Blue Devils by a small margin in the all-time series record. Central Connecticut leads, 10-9 after the two teams split last season in Smithfield. The Bulldogs fell in game one, 5-1, before topping the Blue Devils, 9-1, in five innings during the season finale.

SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS

  • The Mount posts a 19-24 overall record with a 4-6 mark in NEC play. Most recently, Mount St. Mary's split with Coppin State earlier this week, losing the first game, 6-5, before taking game two, 15-7.
  • Junior Shelbee Holcomb leads the NEC with a .407 batting average. Holcomb is also listed as the third toughest player to strikeout in the NEC with 113 at-bats and seven strikeouts. Kaylee Stoner is second in that category with 140 at-bats and seven strikeouts. Stoner also leads the Mountaineers with 47 hits.
  • Lindsay Heinze is Mount's leading slugger on the offensive end posting nine home runs and nine doubles for a .597 slugging percentage.
  • On the defensive side, Amanda Berkley is Mount's main pitcher, tossing over 100 innings so far this season. Berkley ranks second in the conference in walks allowed per seven innings with 1.51. She posts 53 strikeouts and a 3.23 ERA.
  • Anna Nagro leads Mount St. Mary's in her ninth season as head coach.

SCOUTING THE BLUE DEVILS

  • Recently, Central Connecticut dropped is last two games against UConn, 6-0, and game two of an NEC doubleheader with FDU, 10-2. The Blue Devils are 2-6 against the Northeast Conference and 15-18 overall.
  • Central's strength lies in its heavy hitter Sydney Bolan. The sophomore leads the conference in home runs per game (0.30), RBIs per game (1.09), and slugging percentage (.663). Bolan posts 10 home runs, five doubles, and 34 hits so far this season.
  • As a team, Central Connecticut trails the Bulldogs in the conference rankings for most stolen bases per game with 1.33. Freshman Rian Eigenmann leads the Blue Devils in that category with 0.48 stolen bases per game, ranking second in the NEC.
  • In the circle, Carley Stoker leads CCSU striking out 64 batters over a course of 102.2 innings.
  • Central Connecticut is led by head coach Breanna Gleason in her sixth season.   

BULLDOGS NOTES AND NOTABLES

  • The Bulldogs lead the conference with 1.61 stolen bases per game. Sophomore Morgan Powell (Murrieta, Calif.) leads Bryant with 11 stolen bases on the year.
  • Junior Gabrielle Ermish (Pottstown, Pa.) ranks third in the NEC with 1.61 walks allowed per seven innings. Ermish pitched a full seven innings in game two against FDU retiring three batters without giving up a single walk.
  • Senior Kaleigh Goulart (Marion, Mass.) now leads the Black and Gold with three home runs on the season including a walk-off in game one against FDU to top the Knights, 4-3.
  • Bryant is currently ranked first in the NEC with a 7-1 mark. LIU Brooklyn trails Bryant in the two spot with a 5-1 record.
