Five Bulldogs post qualifying times in weekend meets

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Five members of the Bryant University track & field team posted qualifying times as the team competed in both the John Thomas Terrier Classic Invitational and the Massasoit Invitational over the weekend.

COACH SWITZER'S COMMENTS

"I am very excited with how the team performed this weekend at both meets," Bryant University Director of Track & Field Mitchell Switzer said. "We came away with a couple ECAC/IC4A Qualifiers, A couple NEICAAA Qualifiers, a couple school records, a lot of Personal Records, and a lot of season bests which landed on the top 10 all-time list.  The team really stepped up at BU and at Springfield in a way we have not before in my time here at Bryant.  We have three weeks until NECs and I am excited to see what's in store."

TOP PERFORMERS – TERRIER INVITATIONAL (MEN)

  • Senior Ryan Poholek (North Attleboro, Mass.) posted a time of 4:11.55 in the mile, a time that qualified him for both the NEICAAA and IC4A/ECAC Championships. His time was the top in Bryant history, shattering the previous top mark by nearly four seconds.
  • Freshman Chris Fasano (Lake Grove, N.Y.) had a distance of 14.80 meters in the shot put.
  • Junior Adam Winiarz (Norton, Mass.) qualified for the NEICAAA Championships in the 200 meter with a time of 22.43 seconds. Winiarz's time moves him from eighth in the Bryant record book to fourth and the fastest time since 2009.

TOP PERFORMERS – TERRIER INVITATIONAL (WOMEN)

  • Sophomore Emily Cluck (Johnson City, N.Y.) finished 13th in the 400 meter, finishing with a time of 57.35 and qualifying for the NEICAAA Championships. The time is good for second all-time in the Bryant record books.
  • Classmate Jacklyn Sullivan (Plymouth, Mass.) also qualified for the NEICAA Championships in the 800 meters. The sophomore finished with a time of 2:14.98, good for 21st of the 88 entries.
  • Senior Melissa Lodge (Hopkinton, Mass.) ran the mile in 4:58.77, qualifying her for both the NEICAA and IC4A/ECAC Championships. The time was just shy of her program record of 4:55.28, set last season.
  • Junior Alexandra Watts (Clinton, Conn.) set a school record in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.36 meters. Watts bested her previous school-best record of 3.25 meters in the event.

TOP PERFORMERS – MASSASOIT INVITATIONAL (MEN)

  • Junior Evan Smith (Chester, Conn.) had the best overall time in the 60 meters, finishing with a time of 7.12 seconds. The time was just .02 behind his personal best of 7.10, set at Brown's Alden Invitational in the season-opening meet.
  • Smith finished second overall in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.54.
  • Freshman Ryan Dumont finished the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 10.20 seconds, tying his personal best at Bryant. Dumont also finished third overall in the triple jump with a distance of 12.53 meters.
  • Classmate Jacob Borgia's (Westborough, Mass.) cleared height of 3.95 meters was good for second overall in the pole vault. Borgia's vault moves him into sole possession of the ninth-best time in Bryant program history.

TOP PERFORMERS – MASSASOIT INVITATIONAL (WOMEN)

  • Senior Sarah Lapham (Greenwich, N.Y.) finished the 1000 meter fifth overall with a time of 3:16.70.
  • Junior Shirley Carrington (Dorchester, Mass.) finished sixth overall in the long jump with a distance of 4.73 meters. She also finished third overall in the triple jump with a distance of 10.06 meters, entering the record book sixth all-time in the event.
  • Freshman Camryn Wesoloskie (Manchester, Conn.) also moved up in the Bryant record book in the event. Wesoloskie finished with a distance of 9.94 meters, moving from eighth to seventh in program history.
  • Classmate Courtney Kelleher (Wrentham, Mass.) finished ninth overall in the shot put with a distance of 10.67 meters.

MEET NOTES

  • This was the first time Bryant competed in two meets in a weekend this season.
  • This was the first time the Bulldogs headed to the Massasoit Invitational at Springfield College.

UP NEXT

Championship season officially begins for the Bulldogs as the team will send all qualified athletes fo the NEICAAA Championships beginning Feb. 2. The rest of the team will head to Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut, on Feb. 3 for the Wesleyan Invitational.
