Bulldogs win fourth straight, top LIU Brooklyn 75-56

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Freshman Hannah Scanlan (Rumson, N.J.) scored a team-high 21 points and had game-best 12 rebounds to lead the way as the Bryant University women's basketball team topped the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds, 75-56, at the Chace Athletic Center in Smithfield.

  • Bryant jumped out to a 21-4 run at the beginning of the second quarter to take a 36-18 lead with 4:19 left in the second quarter. In that span, junior Kierra Palmer (Aberdeen, Md.) assisted on five baskets and Scanlan scored 12 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The game started tight as Bryant held a 15-14 advantage after the first 10 minutes. Sophomore Masey Zegarowski (Hamilton, Mass.) knocked down a 3-point field goal for the first basket of the game.
  • The Bulldogs offense clicked in a major way in the second quarter, outscoring LIU Brooklyn 27-10. Scanlan poured in 10 points in the quarter and was able to secure her second straight double-double before halftime.
  • The Blackbirds were able to narrow the gap, coming out of the gates hot in the third quarter. LIU Brooklyn won the quarter, 19-10, to cut the Bulldogs lead in half from 18 to 9 entering the final frame.
  • Redshirt junior Naomi Ashley (Hamilton, Ont.) scored seven points and sophomore Sydney Holloway (Morgantown, W. Va.) added nine as the Bulldogs outscored the Blackbirds, 23-13, in the final quarter.

STATS

  • The Bulldogs shot 44.1 percent from the floor in the game and 40 percent from long range.
  • Bryant outrebounded LIU Brooklyn, 47-28. The Bulldogs have won the rebounding battle in each conference game the team has played in.
  • LIU Brooklyn's Denisha Petty-Evans led all scorers with 27 points. She shot 10-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
  • Senior Kathleen Everson (Farmingville, N.Y.) had nine points on 3-of-6 shooting. The Bulldog captain also had three rebounds and an assist.

GAME NOTES

  • Palmer matched her season-high with nine assists. She also had nine helpers on Nov. 21 when the Bulldogs hosted New Hampshire.
  • Three Bulldogs scored in double figures on Saturday. Led by Scanlan's 21, Ashley scored 13 and Holloway added 11. It was the eighth time this season Bryant had at least three players score 10 points.
  • The 19-rebound differential was the highest Bulldog advantage this season.
  • The Black and Gold have won four straight games and have sole possession of third place in the Northeast Conference standings.
  • Bryant has now won its last 11 games over LIU Brooklyn.
