Bulldogs downed by SHU on Senior Night

SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Bryant University women's basketball team fell to Sacred Heart, 60-49, on Monday night during the final regular-season home game of the 2019-20 season.

Seniors Masey Zegarowski (Hamilton, Mass.) and Sydney Holloway (Morgantown, W.Va.) led the Bulldogs with 10 points apiece on Senior Night. Holloway accompanied her 10 points with 11 rebounds marking her tenth double-double performance of the season.

KEY MOMENT 

  • The Bulldogs used an 8-0 run in the game's first four minutes to jump out to an early lead.  
  • The Pioneers went on an 11-4 run over a 5:22 span to close out the second quarter and pull ahead 23-22 going into halftime.  
  • Sacred Heart used an 11-3 run to gain a seven-point 34-27 lead over Bryant with 4:44 to play in the third quarter.  
  • Bryant would use an 11-4 run over a 4:36 minute span to pull within three points of Sacred Heart at 52-49 with under two minutes remaining in the game, but the Pioneers held the Bulldogs at 49 before finishing the game, 60-49. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Bulldogs defense held the Pioneers scoreless over a 4:39 minute span to open up the game, which helped Bryant jump out to an early 8-0 lead over Sacred Heart.  
  • Bryant would hold Sacred Heart to four-of-13 from the field in the first quarter, but a late Pioneer three-pointer closed in on the Bulldog's lead to make it 12-10 in Bryant's favor heading into the second quarter.  
  • A Sacred Heart jumper evened the score at 12-12 before back to back buckets from Holloway and an and-1 from Taty LaFrance Boyce (Norwich, Conn.) made it 18-12 Bulldogs with 6:19 left to play in the first half.  
  • The Pioneers took off on a 7-2 run over a 1:30 span to bring Sacred Heart back within one, 20-19, with 3:57 to go in the second quarter. 
  • Brooke Bjelko (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) layup would keep the Bulldogs ahead 22-19 before a Sacred Heart three-pointer followed by one from the stripe put the Pioneers ahead, 23-22, to end the first half.  
  • Both teams went back and forth to start the third quarter when a free throw from Taty LaFrance Boyce evened the score at 25 all.
  • The Pioneers used a 9-2 run over a 3:32 span to open a seven-point lead over the Bulldogs at 34-27 with 4:44 left in the third quarter.    
  • Bryant responded to the Pioneer run with a 6-0 run of their own to pull within one with 2:50 left in the third frame.   
  • A pair of free throws from Holloway kept the Bulldogs within one before a late Sacred Heart layup and free throw extended the Pioneers lead to 39-35 to close out the third quarter. 
  • Sacred Heart started the fourth quarter with a 9-3 run to go up 48-38 before a jumper from Masey Zegaorowski made it 48-40 Pioneers with 6:11 to go in the game. 
  • Zegorowski's jumper was the start of seven-straight for the Bulldogs and brought Bryant within striking distance as they trailed Sacred Heart, 48-45, with 4:15 remaining.  
  • A Pioneer technical foul led to a Trinity Bravo (Bridgeport, Conn.) jumper to bring the score to 52-49 Scared Heart, with just two minutes remaining in the game. 
  • Sacred Heart shutout the Bulldogs for the remainder of the game to go on to win, 60-49.

STATS

  • Zegarowski and Holloway matched with 10 points apiece while Holloway also pulled down 11 rebounds for a double-double. 
  • Bjelko led with 14 rebounds and also contributed eight points. 
  • LaFrance Boyce swiped the lone steal of the night for the Black and Gold while also adding eight points and nine rebounds. 
  • The Bulldogs outrebounded the Pioneers, 51-28. 
  • 18 of Bryant's 49 points came from the foul line as the Bulldogs went 18-for-27. 

GAME NOTES

  • Bryant falls to 6-19 all-time against SHU. 
  • Holloway's double-double is her tenth of the season and 46th of her career. 
  • The Bulldogs have outrebounded their opponent by double-digits for the second-straight game, marking the seventh time in the last eight games that Bryant has dominated the boards by double-figures. 
  • Bryant now ties for sixth-place in the conference standings with LIU.
