Bulldogs fall short against Binghamton as Fortuny posts 21 PTS

VESTAL, N.Y. – Mariona Planes Fortuny posted her fifth consecutive 20+ point performance and a double-double (21 pts, ten rebs) in the Bryant Univesity women's basketball team's 57-56 loss at Binghamton.

Dana Kiefer scored a career-high nine points, and Nicole Gallagher recorded 12 points.

  • The Bulldogs took a 50-49 lead with 1:30 remaining. The Bearcats responded with a layup and then a three off a Black and Gold turnover to take the lead en route to a victory.

How it Happened

  • It was a back-and-forth affair to begin the first eight minutes of the contest, with the Bulldogs earning a 12-9 advantage. Fortuny tallied five with a three-pointer. Castagne hit a corner triple, and Marta Neira Martinez and Kemari Reynolds added two each.
  • Both defenses held firm for the remainder of the quarter, with the Bearcats tallying two, giving the Black and Gold a 12-11 advantage after one.
  • The intensity continued as both teams tallied 10, giving Bryant a one-point lead at the 4:11 mark of the second quarter (22-21). Fortuny had six, Reynolds recorded two, and Alana Perkins opened the period with a tough right-handed drive.
  • Bryant posted three on an offensive rebound from Gallagher, where she ran to the corner and nailed a three. The Bearcats scored four, and the half ended with a 25-25 tie.
  • Both teams continued to battle as Fortuny scored six straight points, and then Kiefer got on the board with a strong right-handed drive, giving the Dawgs eight, which the Bearcats matched (33-33) at the third quarter media timeout.
  • Both teams wouldn't give in as they each tallied four, making the game tied at 37 heading into the final period (37-37). Kiefer scored all four for the Black and Gold.
  • Bryant came out on fire on both ends of the floor, going on a 10-0 run in the first three minutes of the fourth, earning a 47-37 lead. Castagne and Gallagher hit back-to-back threes, and then Kiefer added four of her own. Binghamton hit a three before the media timeout (47-40).
  • The Bearcats responded with a 9-1 run to take a 49-48 lead, forcing a Bulldogs timeout with 2:14 left in the game.
  • Fortuny then got her own offensive rebound and finished inside to give the Black and Gold the lead (50-49). The Bearcats countered with a 5-0 run resulting in a 54-50 lead with 25 seconds left.
  • Binghamton hit three free throws, and the Bulldogs nailed two three-pointers in the last 8.6 seconds but ran out of time.
