Bulldogs fall to NJIT in OT loss

NEWARK, NJ. – Alana Perkins of the Bryant Univeristy women's basketball team poured in 19 points, including the game-tying three to send the game into overtime in the Bulldogs' 71-67 overtime loss against NJIT. Perkins went 6-10 from deep.

Nicole Gallagher had 12 points and a career-high 15 boards, while freshman Alejandra Ferreirós hauled in a career-high 14 boards and added a career-high nine points, and Megan Bodziony tallied 12 points.

  • The Black and Gold had a 12-point lead heading into the fourth quarter and were outscored 28-12 in the fourth and overtime, including going scoreless for the first four and half minutes of the period.

How it Happened

  • Both teams came out with energy for a fast-paced first five minutes of the game. The Bulldogs earned an 11-7 edge. Mariona Planes Fortuny led the way with four, Gallagher nailed a stepback three, and Bodziony and Dana Kiefer recorded two points each.
  • The Black and Gold finished the quarter on a 9-4 run, with Kiefer hitting a free-throw, Gallaher scoring on an up and under, and Perkins and Bodziony converting back-to-back triples (20-11).
  • The Black and Gold kept their foot on the gas pedal, outdueling the highlanders 7-2 heading into the second quarter media timeout. Ferreirós scored two, and Bodziony scored five while hitting her second from downtown (27-13).
  • Each team battled for the remainder of the half, with Bryant earning a slight 8-7 edge. Ferreiros, Gallagher, Bodziony, and Fortuny all recorded two points (35-20).
  • NJIT came out strong in the second half going on a 5-0 run. The Bulldogs then outscored them 8-6, with Perkins hitting a corner triple and Gallagher recording five before the third-quarter media timeout (43-31).
  • Perkins stole the show for the remainder of the quarter, hitting three consecutive from deep, Gallagher added a three of her own, and the Black and Gold led by 12 (55-43), heading into the fourth quarter.
  • The Highlanders stormed back and went on a 9-0 run before Bodziony nailed a mid-range jumper to break it (57-52). NJIT scored on a layup before the media timeout (57-54).
  • Ferreiros fought hard for a rebound to give Bryant a five-point lead (59-54). NJIT then went on a 5-0 run, including back-to-back buckets off of Bulldog turnovers to tie it a 59 with 1:39 left.
  • NJIT then converted an and-one layup making the score 62-59 with 50.9 remaining in the contest.
  • Perkins then, with 25 seconds left, nailed a straightaway three to tie it up at 62.
  • The Bulldog's defense clamped down, forcing NJIT to miss the final shot and take the game to overtime.
  • Ferreiros hit 1-2 from the line with three and a half remaining to give the Dawgs a lead. The Highlanders responded with a three to take a two-point lead (65-63).
  • Gallagher grabbed a rebound and heaved a full-court pass to Chasco, who finished the layup (65-65).
  • The Bulldogs and Highlanders would then exchange layups tying the contest at 67.
  • NJIT would finish the game on a 4-0, earning the 71-67 overtime victory.

  • Bryant shot 30.8% from the field, 50% from deep, and 56.3% from the free-throw line.
  • Perkins tied her season high with nineteen points and her career-high with six made from deep.

Notes

  • This is the second time in Perkins's career that she has made six from beyond the arc.
  • Gallagher continues playing well in conference play, with this performance being her sixth double-digit scoring effort in seven games.
  • Gallagher has also hauled in 27 rebounds in the last two contests.
