Fortuny records DBL-DBL in home loss to Brown

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Mariona Planes Fortuny tallied 22 points and ten boards in the Bryant University women's basketball team's 58-53 loss at home against Brown.

How it Happened

  • Brown jumped out to an early 6-1 lead in the first four minutes before Fortuny nailed a three to cut the lead to two (6-4).
  • The Bears tallied eight, compared to the Bulldogs five, resulting in a 14-9 lead for Brown.
  • The Bears extended their lead to 18-11 at the beginning of the second quarter, and then the Black and Gold responded with a 10-3 run in three minutes, giving Bryant a 21-18 lead with five minutes remaining in the half. Silvia Gonzalez and Martina Boba tallied four each, and Kemari Reynolds had a strong finish through contact.
  • Brown responded with a 5-2 run to end the half, creating a 27-23 deficit for the Bulldogs at the half.
  • The beginning of the second half was a back-and-forth affair, with the Bears tallying 10 to the Bulldogs' eight (37-31). Then, the Bulldogs caught fire.
  • Fortuny made a jumper, and Reynolds nailed a wing three in front of the home bench, followed by a pull-up jumper from Reynolds, giving Bryant a one-point lead (38-37). Then, off of a missed three-pointer, the Bulldogs hit the gas pedal, going into transition and finding Megan Bodziony, who converted the layup while being fouled (40-37), resulting in a three-point lead for the Black and Gold heading into the fourth quarter.
  • Brown opened the fourth quarter with a 5-0 run to take the lead (42-40).
  • Bodziony broke the run with a corner triple on the dish from Boba (43-42).
  • The Bears would convert back-to-back layups, resulting in a 46-43 deficit for Bryant with four minutes left.
  • Fortuny made a layup, but the Bears hit a three on the next possession to extend the lead to four (49-45).
  • Gonzalez countered with a straightaway three-pointer, cutting the deficit to one with two minutes left (49-48).
  • Brown hit a mid-range jumper; Fortuny then tallied a layup, shrinking the Bear's lead to one with under a minute left (51-50).
  • Brown would counter with a three-pointer, but Fortuny responded with a three of her own, forcing the Bulldogs to foul.
  • The Bears made the first and missed the second and were able to get the offensive rebound, resulting in a 58-53 loss for Bryant.
