BRYANT STRUGGLES ON ROAD AGAINST TOUGH HARVARD SIDE, FALLS SUNDAY AFTERNOON, 19-4

Boxscore

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women’s lacrosse team spotted Harvard a 10-0 lead and wouldn’t be able to neutralize a potent Crimson attack, as Jen VanderMeulen and Miceala Cyr combined for 11 tallies to lead the home team to a 19-4 win over the Bulldogs Sunday afternoon.

VanderMeulen’s eight points (six goals, two assists) were a game high while Cyr chipped in five more scores with one helper to pace eight different Crimson (3-4) scorers. The Bulldogs (1-8) saw goals from four different sources in the loss.

After Harvard ran out to a quick 10-0 advantage just 6:39 into the game – the Crimson would get four goals from VanderMeulen during the stretch, including a natural hat trick in less than a five-minute span – Bryant got on the board with 11:37 left to play in the first half on a tally from freshman Emily Bogan (Swansea, Mass.), the second of her career and second tally in as many games. Senior Eliza DeMarseilles (Branford, Conn.) earned her second assist of the year on the play.

Junior Christine Sutherland (Brewster, N.Y.) made it back-to-back Bulldog tallies with 6:53 to play before the end of the half to cut the visitors’ deficit to 10-2 on a free position goal.

But having already scored once for Harvard in the first minutes of the contest, Cyr would respond, finishing her scoring for the day, recording four-straight tallies to finish off the first half and open second-frame scoring and get the Crimson back a double-digit lead. Melanie Baskind would wrap up a five-goal Harvard run with 12:15 to go in the final session to give the home team a 15-2 advantage.

Sophomore leading scorer Lauren Sheridan (Bethpage, N.Y.) would get on the board with the next score at the 9:55 mark with a free position goal, her 22nd tally of the year, but Tyler Petropulos got it back for Harvard two minutes later.

Senior captain Alli Faiola (Billerica, Mass.) wrapped up the scoring for the Bulldogs with 4:10 left on the clock with an unassisted tally, but the Crimson would score a trio of unanswered goals in the final two minutes for the 19-4 final.

The Bulldogs were outshot 35-21, despite outshooting the Crimson, 14-13, in second-half action and held Harvard to just six final-frame goals. The Crimson edged the Bulldogs in ground balls, 20-17, but dominated the day’s draw controls, 20-5. Harvard committed 33 fouls to Bryant’s 14, but was more successful on the clear, going 15-for-18. The Bulldogs went 12-of-22 on clear attempts in the outing.

Katherine Martino made six stops between the pipes for the Crimson, while sophomore Lauren Filippone (West Babylon, N.Y.) made 10 saves in 52 minutes of action while allowing 13 goals. Senior captain Jessica Bolton (Belgrade Lakes, Maine) made one stop in 7:44, letting in six Harvard scores.

The Bulldogs return home for a six-day, three-game homestand, starting with an April 1 contest against Northeast Conference opponent Long Island University at 7 p.m. at the Bryant Turf Complex.
