Bulldogs fall in defensive battle with Canisius

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Battling a Buffalo blizzard and a hot goalkeeper, the Bryant University women's lacrosse team fell to Canisius 7-6 on Thursday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

COACH BATCHELLER'S COMMENTS

"We chose to play a tough schedule for a reason. We really believe in this team and our capabilities. On the positive side, we've been able to make adjustments during games to stay competitive. Our heart always shows on the field as it did today. Our defense played as a unit and Sam [Santeramo] was our backbone. As we approach our next game, our focus is going to be playing Bryant lacrosse to our full potential on both sides of the field for the full 60 minutes."

KEY MOMENT

After calling timeout with 1:56 left down by a goal, Bryant turned the ball over, putting them on the defensive. They were able to force a turnover but ended up giving the ball back with 22 seconds left and Canisius was able to run out the rest of the clock.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Canisius scored three of the first four goals of the game, with Jen Reininger scoring two of the three. Sophomore Caitlin Breglia (Long Beach, N.Y.) scored her first of the game during the stretch.
• After junior Lauren Britton (Monmouth Beach, N.Y.) and senior Catlin Brown (San Diego, Calif.) tied the game with two goals in 1:01, Reininger scored her third to give the Golden Griffins a 4-3 lead heading into the break.
• Jourdan Roemer scored the opening goal of the second half to give Canisius a 5-3 lead.
• Bryant would fight back, with redshirt sophomore Melissa Wamp (Florham Park, N.J.) tying the game 40 seconds after Brown scored to cut the lead to one.
• Roemer and Wamp would score the last three goals of the game, with the eventual winner coming at the 5:21 mark for Roemer.

STATS

• Canisius won the shot battle, outshooting the Bulldogs 31-21, including 19-8 in the second half.
• Senior Samantha Santeramo (Wantagh, N.Y.) made 11 saves on the afternoon, her third game of the season with 10 or more saves.
• Bryant dominated the ground game, recording 26 ground balls to Canisius' 14
• Bryant was plus-three in turnovers, only coughing it up 19 times and forcing 22 for Canisius.
• Seniors Meaghan Brennan (Glen Head, N.Y.), Madison McNally (East Northport, N.Y.) and Brown all caused two turnovers.
• Sophomore Katherine Clark (New Fairfield, Conn.) recorded five ground balls in her first-career start. Brown and Britton chipped in four.

NOTES

• Wamp's two goals were the first of her career.
• Santeramo had five games total last season (18 games) of 10 saves or more. She already has three in five starts this season.
• After recording four points in her first two games, Brown has been averaging three points in her last three games.
