WOMEN'S SOCCER FALLS AT MOUNT ST. MARY'S, 2-1, IN OVERTIME

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After taking an early lead on a goal scored by sophomore Alison Melley (Centerville, Mass.), the Bryant University women's soccer team could not hold on to the lead, falling at Mount St. Mary's, 2-1, in overtime Friday night in Emmitsburg, Md.

With the loss, the Bulldogs dip to 5-12-2 on the season and 3-5-1 in the Northeast Conference while the Mountaineers end their season with a record of 5-11-3 (2-7-1 NEC).

The Bulldogs jumped out to the early lead in the 34th minute when Melley blasted a shot from 18-feet out into the top left corner and just out of the reach of Mount keeper Amanda Kitzmiller for her first tally of the season.

With time running out in the opening half, the Mountaineers evened up the score in the 44th minute on a goal from Tierney Carabba who received a through ball from Jourdan Brill and hit the bottom left corner to send the teams into halftime tied at 1-1.

With neither squad able to tip in a goal during 45 minutes of second half play, the game was sent into overtime.

The overtime period nearly went scoreless until Jena Stern scored the game-winner in the final minute on a pass from Kelly Baker. Ragan Cote was also credited with an assist on the play.

The Mount outshot the visitors by a margin of 15-13 while Bryant won the battle for corner kicks, 6-3. Freshman keeper Lauren Viverito (Dayton Park, N.J.) made four saves for Bryant while Kitzmiller and Alicia Miller combined for seven saves for the Mount.

The Black and Gold will wrap up their 2010 season on Sunday, Oct. 31 when they visit Monmouth at 11:00 a.m.
