Women's soccer falls at Mount, 2-1, in OT Friday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Despite Sarah Schucker's (Nanuet, N.Y.) equalizing goal in the 85th minute, the Bryant University women's soccer team fell to Mount St. Mary's, 2-1, in overtime Friday evening in Emmitsburg, Md.

The Bulldogs (3-11-1, 1-2-1 Northeast Conference) suffer their sixth overtime loss of the season (0-6-1), while the Mountaineers (2-13, 1-3 NEC) pick up their first three points of league play to boost their position in the NEC standings.

"We just didn't perform well enough to win," said Bryant head coach Chris Flint. "It was encouraging to see a strong final 25 minutes of play in which we were able to score the equalizer, but we just really underperformed in the first 65 minutes, and once you get into overtime you never know what's going to happen and it just didn't go our way tonight."

After a scoreless first half, the Mountaineers broke the gridlock in the 63rd minute off a strike from Alicia Mirando from 20 yards out to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.

With time working against the Bulldogs, Schucker put home her third marker of the season from six yards out in the 85th minute off a pair of one-touch passes from Emily Barbato (Sutton, Mass.) and Scout Benson (Lynnfield, Mass.) to knot the score, 1-1.

Bryant had another promising scoring chance in the 89th minute but Benson's shot went just wide right, forcing yet another overtime match for the Black and Gold.

In overtime, the Bulldogs continued to dominate play but it was Mount St. Mary's that took advantage of their lone scoring chance of the period when Mirando flicked a slow roller past Bryant GK Kaylan Conrad (Avon, Conn.) for the victory.

"We certainly expected a better outcome from today," added Flint. "It is very frustrating but all we can do now is focus on Fairleigh Dickinson. It is going to be a challenge, but we are glad to be back home and we are ready to overcome the adversity."

After a short turnaround, Bryant will host NEC-leading FDU on Sunday here in Smithfield in a 1 p.m. tilt.
