Knights slip by Bulldogs, 1-0, Sunday

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Connie Lewis's goal in the 19th minute was enough as Fairleigh Dickinson held on for a 1-0 victory over the Bryant University women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon at the Bryant Soccer Field.

The Bulldogs (3-12-1, 1-3-1 NEC) dropped their second one-goal game of the weekend, while the Knights (11-5, 4-1) strengthened their spot atop of the league standings.

After the first 15 minutes were played evenly, the Knights were able to strike thanks to a good switch of fields. Lewis was left open to dribble to the top of the 18 and her shot found the top left corner to give the guests the advantage.

Playing from the behind, the Black and Gold had several chances to find the equalizer and none were better than Kaitlyn Spangler's (Acton, Mass.) with just under six minutes to play. The Bulldogs earned a free kick just off the corner of the 18 and Spangler placed a beautiful strike to the back post but the ball caromed off the crossbar and was cleared away by the Knights.

Despite the loss, Kaylan Conrad (Avon, Conn.) played well and finished with five saves. She made a spectacular diving punch on an attempt from one of the league's top strikers in Rachel Hoekstra.

The Bulldogs return to the pitch on Friday, Oct. 24 when they travel to New Britain, Conn., to take on Central Connecticut.
