NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Bryant University women's swim team concluded an outstanding 2010 Northeast Conference Championship Saturday night with more records falling and another Gold Medal handed out as the Bulldogs finished fourth overall in the final standings.
At Saturday's finale, the Bulldogs set five more school records out of six events competed to finish with 276 total team points for fourth and good enough to finish ahead of Sacred Heart, Mount St. Mary's and St. Francis (NY).
The 2010 NEC Outstanding Swimmer award and NEC Outstanding Rookie of the Meet accolade went to both two individuals: Bryant's Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, MA/Barnstable) and CCSU's Taylor Friedmann.
After winning gold in the 50 freestyle (23.96), Ostrander set an NEC record in the 100 backstroke (56.47) en route to claiming three gold medals - finishing the Championship with a first place in the 100 free in a school record time of 51.93, smashing her previous school mark of 54.48. Teammate Jill Squillante (Sayville, NY) was 14th with a finals time of 55.59 while sophomore Amy D'Olympia (Mattapoisett, Mass.) was 16th in 55.73.
Senior Jess Looney (Goffstown, N.H.) had a great race in the prelims of the 200 backstroke, finishing fifth in 2:09.92, just shy of her school record of 2:09.36 set in 2007. She would take home sixth in the finals in 2:13.45.
Freshman Molly Smith (Belmont, Mass.) who has enjoyed a tremendous first year at Bryant, capped off her first conference championship meet with a third-place in the 200 breaststroke Saturday. Smith took third in the prelims in 2:27.46 and came back to place third in the finals in a new school record time of 2:26.92. Classmate Brianne Dwyer (Hicksville, N.Y.) was fifth in the finals in a time of 2:29.72.
In the 200 butterfly, sophomore Abby Whittaker (Salisbury, Mass.) set a school record in the prelims with a time of 2:12.20 and earned a top-10 finish in the finals in 2:13.51. Senior Sarah Drew (Milton, Mass.) was 13th.
In the 1650 freestyle, freshman Kim Carballeira (East Setauket, N.Y.) set a record with a great swim to place seventh in 17:58.95, bettering the three-year old school mark by nearly a minute (18:57.29).
The Bulldogs finished up in style with a great performance in the 400 freestyle relay. The team of Dwyer, Carballeira, Squillante, and Ostrander blew away the school record with a fourth-place finish in 3:37.59.
Saint Francis (PA) claimed the title as Northeast Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Champions, for the first time ever, after finishing the three-day event with a point total of 556.50. Central Connecticut State came in second after capturing seven of the meet's 20 events to total 508.50. Finishing third was Wagner with 318 points. Bryant placed fourth (276), while Sacred Heart (217) and Mount St. Mary's (106) took fifth and sixth, respectively. St. Francis (NY) rounded out the field of seven (89).
