WOMEN'S SWIMMING STRUGGLES AGAINST VISITING VERMONT; BRYANT SPLITS THE WEEKEND SCHEDULE

Results

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – A day after the Bryant University women's swimming team defeated Fairfield, the Bulldogs fell short against the University of Vermont Sunday afternoon at the Chace Athletic Center pool,160.00-100.00. Despite the loss, Bryant still managed to capture three events against the Catamounts, as the visiting team set several new pool records.

With the loss, Bryant moves to 3-7 on the season but still has eight events before the 2011 Northeast Conference Championships.

The 200-yard medley team of Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.), Brianne Dwyer(Hicksville, N.Y.), Abby Whittaker (Salisbury, Mass.) and Amy D'Olympia (Mattapoisett, Mass.) started the scoring for the Bulldogs, as the lineup recorded a first place finish, touching the wall in 1:57.73.

Ostrander was not finished though, as the junior took first place in the 50-yard freestyle event, winning the contest with a time of 24.91.

Bryant also recorded points in the 800-yard freestyle relay, the last event of the meet. Freshman Taylor Debever (Denver, Colo.), Kim Caraballeria (East Setauket, N.Y.), Katelyn Kidney (Lynn, Mass.) and Jill Squillante (Sayville, N.Y.) mustered together a first-place finish, giving the squad 11 more points.

Despite the solid performance, Vermont proved to be too much to handle as the Catamounts took 11 of the 14 events. The visitors had more than five swimmers record a first-place finish.

The women's team will return to action after thanksgiving break with the University of Rhode Island Invitational on Dec. 3rd and 4th.
