Ostrander claims 50 free at Harvard

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Junior Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.) claimed the Bryant University women's swimming team's only first-place finish of the afternoon, winning the 50 meter free at the non-scoring New England Collegiate Challenge held at Harvard University on Sunday.

A winner of four-of-six individual events last weekend, Ostrander swam the 50 meters in a time of 27.91, beating Harvard's Ellie Johnson (28.20) by less than a second. She also finished third in the 100 meter back and sixth in the 100 meter free.

Facing some of the toughest competition in the region, the Bulldogs received strong showings from several swimmers. Sophomore Taylor DeBever (Denver, Colo.) earned a pair of top-10 finishes, claiming sixth in the 200 meter free and fourth in the 100 meter free. Junior Molly Smith (Belmont, Mass.) matched her with top-10 finishes in the 200 meter free (ninth) and the 200 meter breast (fourth). The 400 meter free relay team of Ostrander, DeBever and freshmen Mara Valenzuela (Bridgewater, N.J.) and Caitlin Hanahoe (Prairie, Minn.) swam to a fourth-place finish to close out the meet.

Bryant returns to the pool on Wednesday, Oct. 26, when it travels to Boston, Mass., to take on Northeastern University. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
