WSWM beats Maine for first time, 164-98

BULLDOGS MOVE TO 4-0 WITH 164-98 VICTORY OVER MAINE

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Taylor DeBever (Denver, Colorado) and senior Casey Ostrander (Yarmouthport, Mass.) combined to win six events as the Bryant University women's swimming and diving team earned its first-ever victory over the University of Maine, 164-98, on Thursday night at the Chace Athletic Center.

In defeating the Black Bears (0-2) for the first time in program history, the Bulldogs continued their strong to start to the season as they remained unbeaten at 4-0. It is the best start to a season for the Black and Gold since moving to Division I for the 2008-09 season.

DeBever's three victories continued her winning streak on the season as she has won all 11 individual events she has competed in. On Thursday, she started her night off on the right foot, winning the 1000 free with a pool-record time of 10:38.40, over eight seconds faster than the next swimmer. She finished by claiming the 100 free (52.91), 500 free (5:12.56) and swimming the third leg of the winning 400 free relay team. DeBever joined Dana Yu (Bridgewater, N.J.), Kaitlin Buckley (Duxbury, Mass.) and Mara Valenzuela (Bridgewater, N.J.) to win the final relay of the night. Ostrander matched her teammate with three victories, increasing her win streak on the season to 12. She won the 50 free (24.08), 200 free (1:56.37) and the 200 back (2:08.30).

Bryant also received victories from senior Molly Smith (Belmont, Mass.) and freshmen Elisabeth Schauer (Pelham, N.Y.). Smith continued her strong start to the season, picking up her fifth and sixth victories of the year in the 200 breast (2:27.02) and the 200 IM (2:14.28). After finishing second in the 100 back in the first three meets of the season, Schauer finally grabbed her first-career victory in the event with a time of 1:00.37. She added to that a second-place finish to Ostrander in the 200 back with a time of 2:11.04.

The Bulldogs will have little time to rest as they return to the pool on Friday, Nov. 2 when they host Central Connecticut and New Hampshire in a tri-meet at the Chace Athletic Center Pool. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
