Bulldogs cruise past Providence, 183-114, Friday night

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Sophomore Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) won three more events and freshman Eliza Brant (Hauppauge, N.Y.) added two more victories to lead the Bryant University women's swimming and diving team to a dominating 183-114 victory over Providence College on Friday night.

The Bulldogs are now 2-0 in dual meets this season after Friday's night's win. Bryant won both relay events, both diving events and all but five individual events on the evening.

Rice led the way with three individual victories, taking home the 50 free (26.79), the 100 free (59.58) and the 200 IM (2:27.59). Brant swept the breast events with times of 1:15.79 in the 100 and 2:46.13 in the 200.

Bryant also received victories from Alyssa DiFiore (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Erin Daly (Reading, Mass.). DiFiore won the 800 free with a time of 9:24.80 and finished second in the 400 free with a time of 4:38.13. Daly won the 200 free with a time of 2:10.55. Nicole Salzano (Elmwood, N.J.) finished second in both the 200 free and 200 back.

The Black and Gold dominated the boards, finishing 1-3 in the two 1 meter diving events. Carissa Stemen (Naples, Fla.) won the first 1 meter event with a score of 243.37 and was followed by Ann Burdick (Glenmont, N.Y.) (240.75) and Kelci Abernethy (Chandler, Ariz.) (234.07). In the second event, Stephanie Jennings (Elmont, N.Y.) won with a score of 247.5 and was followed by Abernethy (234.96) and Stemen (231.00).

In the relays, Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Britain), Brant, Taylor Poliseno (Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) and Kayleigh Canavan (Cumberland, R.I.) combined to win the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:04.55. Salzano, Valeria Watson (Mexico City, Mexico), Domenica Alcala (Cancun, Mexico) and Rice combined to win the 400 free relay with a time of 4:06.10.

The Bulldogs open their home schedule on Saturday night when they host the University of Maine at the Chace Athletic Center Pool. The meet is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
