Bulldogs trail CCSU, Wagner after day one of tri-meet

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's swimming and diving team is trailing Northeast Conference rivals Central Connecticut and Wagner after day one in New Britain, Conn.

The tri-meet is taking place over two days and pits the top three teams in the NEC preseason poll. CCSU leads the Bulldogs 133-53 and Wagner leads Bryant 118-68.

Bryant posted a strong showing in the 1 meter dive, finishing 2-5. Kelci Abernethy (Chandler, Ariz.) finished second (242.65), Carissa Stemen (Naples, Fla.) finished third (231.75), Stephanie Jennings (Elmont, N.Y.) was fourth (227.50) and Ann Burdick (Glenmont, N.Y.) finished fifth (225.00).

The Black and Gold also had strong showings in the 100 back, the 200 fly, the 50 free and the 1650 free. Nicole Salzano (Elmwood Park, N.J.) finished third (59.73) and Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Britain) finished fourth (1:00.34) in the 100 back.

Domenica Alcala (Cancun, Mexico) finished fourth in the 200 fly (2:14.14), Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) finished third in the 50 free (24.98) and Mackenzie Kirk (San Jose, Calif.) finished third in the 1650 free (17:57.65).

The tri-meet continues on Saturday with diving at 10 a.m. and swimming at noon.
