Bulldogs take down Providence in non-conference dual meet

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After falling to Bucknell last week, the Bryant University women's swimming and diving team bounced back in a big way on Friday night, defeating Providence 196-103 at the Chace Athletic Center pool.

Coach Cameron's Comments

"I think there was a lot of excitement because we had a couple women who had a breakout weekend at practice and now they will have the confidence going forward and know what they're capable of. We've known what they're capable of and now they're buying in and are starting to believe they can swim fast."

Key Moment

  • Bryant started the meet about as well as a team can, sweeping the night's first event, the 400 medley relay, and setting a pool record in the process. The team of Alaina Scifo (Ipswich, Great Britain), Kayleigh Canavan (Cumberland, R.I.), Alexa Rivera (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Jillian Rice (Trumbull, Conn.) swam a time of 3:58.31, beating the record by 0.31 seconds.

How the Swimmers Did

  • Scifo added two individual victories on the night, winning the 100 back and 200 IM.
  • Rice finished a perfect 4-for-4 on the night. Including the 400 medley relay win, she won in the 100 and 200 free and helped her team win the 200 free relay.
  • Rivera also finished a perfect 4-for-4. She added victories in the 200 free relay, the 50 free and the 100 fly.
  • Canavan added an individual victory in the 100 breast.

How the Divers Did

  • Both Carissa Stemen (Naples, Fla.) and Kelci Abernethy (Chandler, Ariz.) clocked in two Top 3 finishes on the night.
  • Abernethy won the 3-meter dive with a 251.01 score and finished in third in the 1-meter.
  • Stemen finished in second in the 1-meter dive and third in the 3-meter dive.

Stats and Notables

  • Rice has now won her first 12 races to start the season.
  • Rivera won all four of her events for the first time this season.
  • Abernethy made it three wins in three appearances in the 3-meter dive.
  • Bryant has now defeated two Power 5 schools this season, taking down an ACC opponent (Boston College) and a Big East program (Providence).
