Bryant splits weekend action

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team split a pair of matches over the weekend in Smithfield, topping Wagner, 7-0, on Saturday before falling to Quinnipiac, 7-0, on Sunday.

On Saturday, the Bulldogs flexed their muscles, putting on a spectacle en route to a 7-0 sweep of the Seahawks. Devlin-Ann Ammendola (Massapequa, N.Y.) and Lucy Bird (Hamilton, New Zealand) led the way with impressive, 6-1, 6-1, and, 6-0, 6-0, efforts, in first and second singles, respectively.

Irma Rodriguez-Lockwood (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) topped Julia Teichman, 5-7, 7-6, 6-0, in the number three singles spot, while Jovana Hadzi-Tanovic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro) downed Jenna Harris, 6-0, 6-3. Lyan Juarbe (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) and Mariah Korn (Tiverton, R.I.) also earned convincing singles victories in a great team effort by the Bulldogs.

On Sunday, Bryant ran into a very talented Quinnipiac squad that did not allow the Bulldogs an inch as they were handed their first Northeast Conference loss of the season. Lucy Bird was the only Bulldog to take her match to three sets against Ariana Launie in the #6 singles spot, but Launie took it three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 10-5.

The Bulldogs will return to action as they continue their home stand on Friday against the University at Albany at 3:00 p.m.
