Women's tennis puts up best-ever showing at Stony Brook Invite

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Behind strong showings in double's the competition, the Bryant University women's tennis team put together their best performance to date at the Stony Brook Invitational over the weekend.

No. 1 doubles tandem Ryan Brown (Austin, Texas) and Marion Bouillin (San Diego, Calif) and No. 2 doubles pairing Ashanti Campfield (Stratford, Conn.) and Linnea Sjoberg (Stockholms län, Sweeden) each advanced to the semifinals of the A Doubles Flight, the best showing at Stony Brook in program history.

After running through Wong/Leong from Fordham, 8-3, in the first round, Brown and Bouillin took down Pang and Scmitz, 8-7, before running into a very tough Stony Brook duo in the semifinals, falling to Movchan and Dix, 8-5.

In similar fashion, the freshman pairing of Sjoberg and Campfield defeated teams from Fordham and Marist to set up a showdown with Stony Brook's Smergut and Berdoche in the semifinals, but the heavy hitting Seawolves were too much for the Bryant rookies as they advanced, 8-4.

"We did a nice job of drawing Stony Brook out of their comfort zone of heavy hitting so that was encouraging," said Bryant head coach Barbara Cilli. "But we needed to be a little bit more aggressive, not taking advantage of our chances."

In singles action, both Brown and Bouillin took care of their opening round opponents with relative ease, with Brown topping Ellie Ball from Fordham, 6-1, 6-1, and Bouillin defeating Marists Karly Pong, 6-2, 6-3, however in the second round, Brown was once again stopped by Stony Brook, this time Vozniak took down the All-NEC selection, 6-1, 6-1, while Bouillin fell to Fordham's Sarah Ali in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8.

In Flight C, Campfield picked up arguably the best win of her young Bulldog career, taking down Navy's Claudia Mackenzie a top-100 ranked junior, 6-4, 5-7, 10-2, before falling in the second round in three sets. Freshman Stefanie Arroyo (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) picked up a nice comeback win the second round of Flight D, topping URI's Jordan Ruck, 3-6, 6-3, 10-4, before dropping a semifinal match to Navy's Rozel Hernandez, 6-3, 7-5.

"All in all, it was great representation across the board by the entire team," added Cilli. "The was by far our best showing at this tournament in program history."

The Black and Gold will continue fall action on Saturday when they host Holy Cross for a dual match in Smithfield at 10 a.m.
