Bulldogs remain unbeaten in NEC, defeat Pioneers, 5-2, and Seahawks, 7-0, over the weekend

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team remains undefeated in Northeast Conference play after overcoming Sacred Heart, 5-2, on Saturday and Wagner, 7-0, on Sunday.

Saturday

The Pioneers (9-9, 2-2 NEC) won the doubles point over the Bulldogs (8-7, 4-0) after Katie Derienzo and Taylor Gurda paired up to defeat juniors Marion Bouillin (San Diego, Calif.) and Ryan Brown (Austin, Texas) , 6-3, in No. 1 doubles and Paige Olson and Lindsey Post took down sophomores Ashanti Campfield (Stratford, Conn.) and Nina Luiggi (Nottingham, England), 7-6 (7-5) in No. 2 doubles.

Derienzo went on to find Sacred Heart's second point of the day in No. 1 singles, as she beat Brown, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4. The remaining singles matches resulted in Bryant's favor, including sophomore Linnea Sjoberg's (Stockholm, Sweden) No. 2 singles win over Paige Olson, 1-6, 6-4, 10-7. Bouillin and Campfield each defeated their competition, 6-2, 6-4, in No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively, while sophomore Stefanie Arroyo (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) moved past Claudia Ruiz, 6-0, 6-2, in No. 6 singles.

Sunday

The Bulldogs hosted the Seahawks (7-6, 2-3) on senior day on Sunday, sweeping the guests, 7-0. The Black and Gold won the doubles point outright as the Bryant duos of Bouillin and Leonard and Campfield and Luiggi defeated their adversaries, 6-1, in No. 1 and No. 2 doubles. Arroyo teamed up with senior Jovana Hadzi-Tanovic (Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro) for the No. 3 doubles victory over Jenna Harris and Rina Baynes, 6-3.

Sjoberg beat Aauika Sagwal, 6-3, 6-1, in No. 1 singles, while Luiggi exhausted Sam Hodges by the same margin in No. 3 singles. Baynes won the first No. 4 singles set, 6-2, but Campfield bounced back to take the final two sets, 6-2, 10-3. Hadzi-Tanovic rounded out the Bryant sweep, overpowering Harris, 6-1, 6-1, in No. 6 singles.
