Saints edge out Bulldogs, 4-3, in spring opener

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team opened the spring season against Siena on Sunday, where the Bulldogs were edged out, 4-3.

The Bulldogs (0-1) captured the doubles points over the Saints (5-0), sealing victories at No. 2 and 3 doubles. The Bryant pair of Ashanti Campfield (Stratford, Conn.) and Nina Luiggi (Nottingham, England) took down Julia Dunbar and Juliana Goehner, 6-4, while Linnea Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden) and Stefanie Arroyo (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) defeated Ali Garrity and Anessa Leyva by the same margin.

Sjoberg and Arroyo both went on to earn Bryant's only two points in singles play. Sjoberg beat Ali Garrity in three games, 6-4, 4-6, 11-9, at No. 1 singles, while Arroyo also won in three over Anessa Leyva, 5-7, 6-3, 10-5, at No. 4. The Saints dominated at No. 5 and 6 singles while Campfield was edged out by Ivana Boberic, 6-4, 7-5, at No. 2 singles and Luiggi, 7-5, 7-5, at No. 3 singles.

"Linnea and Stefanie had a good day," said head coach Barbara Cilli. "I don't like to see matches go this way, particularly when we are in it like we were, but for the first match, it tells us exactly what we need to work on."

The Bulldogs face Brandeis next on the road on Saturday, Feb. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
