Bulldogs open NEC play with strong, 6-1, win over Mount

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team has put together back-to-back wins after opening Northeast Conference play with a 6-1 win over Mount St. Mary's on Friday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (2-9, 1-0 NEC) secured the first point in doubles play, sweeping the Mount (3-10, 0-2) at all three spots. The Bryant duo of Marion Bouillin (San Diego, Calif.) and Ryan Brown (Austin, Texas) were victorious at No. 1 doubles, 6-3, while Ashanti Campfield (Stratford, Conn.) and Nina Luiggi (Nottingham, England) teamed up to win, 6-2, at No. 2 doubles. Stefanie Arroyo (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) and Linnea Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden) joined forces to take down Erin Benefiel and Emma Blake, 6-0, at No. 3.

The Mount scored their only point of the match at No. 1 singles, as Alexa Quintanilla trumped Bouillin, 6-3, 6-3. The Bulldogs earned their remaining five points in positions two through six. Sjoberg was victorious at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-4, while Campfield won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Luiggi and Arroyo both defeated their competitors, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3 and 4 singles, respectively. Briana Leonard (Westford, Mass.) sealed the No. 6 singles point impressively, defeating Blake, 6-1, 6-0.

"Mount St. Mary's looked stronger than ever, especially at one and two," said head coach Barbara Cilli.

The return to play on Sunday when they take on St. John's at the National Tennis Center at 7:30 p.m.
