Bulldogs sweep in NEC weekend play

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University women's tennis team had a perfect weekend, going 2-0 in Northeast Conference play after defeating Fairleigh Dickinson, 4-3, on Saturday and Sacred Heart, 5-2, on Sunday

In a rematch of last year's title match, the Bulldogs (3-12, 2-1 NEC) faced the Knights (7-7, 3-1) on Saturday, edging them out, 4-3. FDU won the doubles point, capturing wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles, while Bryant won by default at No. 3 doubles.

The Bulldogs outscored the Knights in singles play, earning points at No. 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles, including Bryant's win by default at No. 6 singles. Junior Linnea Sjoberg (Stockholm, Sweden) defeated Tatiana Eftenoiu, 7-5, 6-4, at two. Classmate Ashanti Campfield (Stratford, Conn.) took down Marta Ruszczynska in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, at No. 3 singles, while doubles' partner Nina Luiggi (Nottingham, England) was triumphant at No. 4 singles, moving by Liza Renchenko, 6-1, 6-4.

"It was a great job by the team to tough out a win against FDU on windy day," said head coach Barbara Cilli.

Vs. Sacred Heart

The Bulldogs (4-12, 3-1 NEC) moved to 3-1 against NEC opponents this season after defeating the Pioneers (3-13, 1-4), 5-2, on Sunday.

The Black and Gold swept the doubles point, taking a 1-0 edge into singles play. The duo of Marion Bouillin (San Diego, Calif.) and Ryan Brown (Austin, Texas) won at No. 1 doubles. Campfield and Luiggi paired up to win at No. 2 doubles, while Stefanie Arroyo (Gurabo, Puerto Rico) and Sjoberg were victorious at No. 3 doubles.

Boullin was also successful in singles play, defeating Brianne Lauria in three games, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Campfield moved to 3-1 on the weekend after winning at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3, while Arroyo was successful at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-3. Brown finalized the Bulldogs' 5-2 victory after taking down Claudia Ruiz, 7-5, 6-3, at No. 5 singles.

The Bulldogs wrap up regular-season play on Friday, April 14, when they travel to face Wagner at 2 p.m.
