Bryant recognized in Volleyball Magazine

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University volleyball team gained national recognition this past week for its work with Rhode Island Special Olympics and the Unified Sports Clinic it hosted in September. The Bulldogs received mention in the January edition of Volleyball Magazine.

The instructional clinic, put on by Bulldog volleyball coaches and players, was well attended, with 12 local high school teams and over 150 athletes and partners participating in learning the ins and outs of volleyball – from rules to serving to scoring points and more.

Members of the Bulldog squad spent time with participants both during the clinic and before at an afternoon-snack pizza party.

The Unified high school program, now in its second year sponsoring volleyball, pairs individuals with intellectual disabilities with an equal number of traditional athletes and peers or partners. An outgrowth of the Special Olympics, Unified Sports represents an opportunity for those with disabilities to train and compete on a school sports team and provides meaningful inclusion for participants with their non-disabled peers.
