Clyburn, Gaffney pace Bryant to 3-1 victory

GAFFNEY'S DOUBLE-DOUBLE LEADS BULLDOGS TO 3-1 WIN OVER ST. FRANCIS (NY)

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Junior Alexandria Clyburn (Cartersville, Ga.) knocked down a match-high 16 kills and added five blocks as one of three Bulldogs to register double-digit kills, leading the Bryant University volleyball team to a 3-1 win over St. Francis (NY) on the road Sunday afternoon.

Junior Kendall Gaffney (Colorado Springs, Colo.) recorded her first double-double of the season and the only of Sunday's contest with 11 kills and 11 digs, also serving up a match-high two aces to go along with three blocks. Rookie Claire Van Dyk (New Richmond, Wis.) added 10 kills with an ace on the day as the Bulldogs (8-15, 4-6 Northeast Conference) overcame a loss in the first set to top the Terriers (3-22, 1-7) for the second time this season.

Junior Leigh Fishback (Edmonds, Wash.) posted 23 assists to lead the match while her teammate and counterpart Jana Kmec (Stratford, Conn.) came in just behind with 22. Sophomore Jocelyn Taylor (Marlborough, Conn.) posted seven kills and a contest-best eight blocks, including one solo stuff, while classmate Elena Lohr (Loveland, Ohio) paced the match on defense with 23 digs.

Maggie Miu led the home team with 14 kills and a team-best six blocks while Slavica Stefanovic chipped in 12 kills with nine digs and three blocks. Kamalei Clifton dished out 21 assists while Naomi Flinders picked up 21 digs to lead the St. Francis (NY) defense.

The home team opened the match with a 1-0 advantage after a 25-22 set-one victory before the Black and Gold reversed the score in the second frame to knot the contest at 1-1. Bryant would go on to take 25-18 and 25-23 wins in the third and fourth to earn the 3-1 match victory.

The Bulldogs outkilled the Terriers, 55-47, on the day and hit at a .217 team clip. The visitors won the assists battle, 53-42, and the margin on defense with 75 digs to the hosts' 61.

The Bulldogs return home for their next three outings and start out the home stretch Wednesday, Oct. 17 with a 7 p.m. Northeast Conference bout against Quinnipiac University.
