Bulldogs open home slate Tuesday afternoon against Quinnipiac

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University volleyball team opens its 2017 home schedule on Tuesday afternoon when it welcomes Quinnipiac University to the Chace Athletic Center. First serve is set for 4:00 p.m.

Series History

  • Bryant and Quinnipiac will be meeting for the 14th time on Tuesday afternoon.
  • The Bulldogs won the first 12 meetings before the Bobcats earned a 3-0 victory last year in Hamden, Connecticut.

Bulldog Notes and Notables

  • Bryant opened the season last weekend in Fullerton, California, going 1-2 at the Titan Tournament.
  • The Bulldogs fell to Drake (3-1) and Cal St. Fullerton (3-0) and earned their only win over UC Riverside (3-0).
  • Junior Julia Flynn (Pembroke, Mass.) recorded a double-double in both matches she appeared in. She averaged 3.57 kills and 3.57 digs per set in the two matches.
  • Classmate Kirstyn Sperry (Phoenix, Ariz.) may have been a bit better, registering a double-double in all three matches. She finished the weekend averaging 5.10 assists per set and 4.30 digs per set.
  • Freshman Erika Ward (Rochester, Mich.) had a strong start to her career, posting 60 digs in 10 matches on her way to Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week honors. She increased her dig total in all three matches, posting 19, 20 and 21, respectively.

A bit about Quinnipiac

  • Quinnipiac opened the season at the Fort Wayne Invitational last weekend, going 0-3 against Fort Wayne, Toledo and SIU Edwardsville.
  • Two of the Bobcats' three losses came in five sets.  
  • Quinnipiac won 21 matches in 2016, an 18-game improvement from the previous season. The improvement was the largest in the nation last year.
  • The Bobcats were picked to finish second in the MAAC this season.
  • Junior Kat Miller posted 29 kills and 34 digs in three matches over the weekend, while sophomore Natalie Alechko and junior Jen Coffey are tied for the team lead with 34 kills.
