CROSS COUNTRY OPENS SEASON FRIDAY HOSTING INVITATIONAL

men's race 4 pm / women's race 4:30 pm

SMITHFIELD, RI – The Bryant University men’s and women’s cross country teams are set to open their 2009 seasons Friday afternoon when the Bulldogs host the annual Bryant Invitational.  The men’s race begins at 4 pm followed by the women’s race at 4:30 pm.  Both races are 5-kilometers in length.

Teams from Merrimack, Navy Prep, Northeastern, Roger Williams, Southern Connecticut, Stonehill, UConn, URI and Central Connecticut are scheduled to compete.

The Bryant men will miss last year’s standout Tom Casey who has graduated, but will be led by juniors Ben Coughlin (Worcester, MA), Chris Kelleher (Ellington, CT) and Scott Twardowski (Rehoboth, MA).  All are coming off strong seasons for head coach Stephanie Reilly.

Coughlin earned a solid 13th place finish at last year’s Bryant Invitational while Twardowski placed 16th at last year’s Bryant Invite and was 58th in the 2009 NEC Championships.

The Bryant women, one of the youngest teams in the region a year ago, have a year of experience under their belts and will look to the leader of junior Jennifer Denise (East Patchogue, NY) and sophomores Katelyn Arouca (Hanson, MA), Marissa Donovan (Belmont, NH), Amanda Garber (Brewster, NY) and Kat Ragone (Bourne, MA) in 2009.
