Background of Student-Athlete Advising

Classes, GPA & Registration
Depending on whether you, the student-athlete, are in or out of season for your respective sport, you may be required to schedule courses that end by a certain time of day. A full list of practice times is provided by the Department of Athletics and distributed to the advising staff, but attention should be given by the student-athlete accordingly when scheduling classes.

The academic advising staff, when meeting with you, will help to coordinate required classes and course times with your practice schedules. In the event of a conflict, you, your coach and the Associate Director of Advising & Student-Athlete Academic Certification should all meet and come to an agreement.

Travel and Missed Class Time
The Associate Director of Advising & Student-Athlete Academic Certification generates electronic documentation listing class time to be missed by enrolled student-athletes due to competition and travel. This is sent via email to the professors of all student-athletes after the add/drop period each semester. Student-athletes are then notified that these travel letters have been sent and strongly advised to meet with their professors prior to any absence to discuss any conflicts between their approved travel schedule and the class. Student-athletes are also strongly advised to meet with their professors well in advance of their absence to make arrangements for missed assignments/exams.

Professors are expected to make reasonable accommodations for students to make up missed exams or assignments under the following documented circumstances: "the student is away from campus attending an official university function or is representing the university in an official capacity (e.g. profession meeting, conference, as a member of a judging team academic or athletic competitions, etc.).”
