Bryant completes season sweep of Brown on Tuesday, 14-2

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Toby Scheidt tossed three scoreless innings in his first collegiate start and the Bryant baseball pitching staff held Brown to just one hit as the Bulldogs earned an 14-2 victory on Tuesday afternoon at Murray Stadium.

The Bulldogs improve to 16-10 overall and have won five-straight games. Bryant returns to the diamond this weekend with a three-game series at UAlbany.

Making his first-career start, Scheidt faced the minimum over a career-high 3.0 innings. He didn't surrender a hit, walked two and struck out one. Cam Foster, Colin Brodeur, Mark Scamardella and Kaden Hilburger followed in relief as the Bulldogs posted their first one-hitter since March 9, 2018.

Carmine Petosa gave Bryant a lead with a three-run home run and finished with three hits and a career-high five RBI. Zac Zyons (2-5, 2RBI), Gavin Noriega (2-3, 2BB, 2R), Matt Smith (2-5, 2B) and Gavin Greger (2-5, 2RBI) each had multiple hits.

How it Happened

  • Bryant's defense turned double plays in each of the first two innings behind Scheidt.

  • The Black and Gold extended their lead in the fourth on a two-run single from Zyons. Chris Einemann moved the runners into scoring position with a sac bunt on an 0-2 pitch and Zyons followed with a single past a drawn-in infield to make it 5-0.
  • Brown got on the board in the fourth, scoring two runs on a pair of wild pitches. Aleksei Goldhill saved three more runs as he made a sliding play down the third base line with the bases loaded. He then raced and dove head first to the third base bag for the final out.
  • Bryant pushed its lead back to five with a pair of unearned runs in the sixth. A ground ball through the third baseman's legs scored the first run and Gavin Greger made it 7-2 with a single to left.
  • Einemann made it 8-2 in the seventh as his ground out to short brought home a run.
  • Bryant added six runs in the eighth. Greger drove in the first run of the inning and Petosa plated two with a double into the right field corner to make it 11-2. Einemann and Noriega added RBI singles and Brandyn Durand walked with the bases loaded to make it 14-2.
