Big Green tops the Bulldogs, 3-2, Sunday afternoon

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – After a 2-0 lead over Dartmouth College, the Bryant University field hockey team loses, 3-2, in the final few minutes of regulation.

After 47 minutes of play, the Bulldogs (1-7-0) led the Big Green (3-3-0) by two goals, but Dartmouth was able to respond, scoring the tying and game winning goals within a minute of each other.

Junior Victoria Danby (Lancaster, Mass.), who is seventh in the country for goals per game, continued her goal streak, adding two more to her nine-goal total and logging her seventh game in a row with a score. The forward's first goal came just eight minutes into the game, when freshman Emily Perryman (Lebanon, N.H.) passed from the top of the circle to Danby, who finished high into the net.

The second score came in the 47th minute, after senior Bronwyn Walton (North Vancouver, B.C.) stick stopped the penalty corner pass from junior Erin Karcher (Kennet Square, Pa.), allowing Danby to find the back of the cage.

The Big Green responded to the Bulldog lead with a trio of scores late in the match. In the 62nd minute, Dartmouth capitalized on a penalty corner, after Anna Ewasechko inserted the pass to Eliza Becker for the stick stop, setting up Brooke Van Valkenburg for the score.

Nearly five minutes later, Ewasechko took another penalty corner for the Big Green and found Rebecca Hu for the tying goal. Within a minute, Van Valkenburg notched her second score of the game off a give and go with Becker in the circle, solidifying the Dartmouth 3-2 victory.

Bulldog keeper Marissa Elizardo (New Wales, Pa.) tallied 10 saves in the match, while Dartmouth goalie notched four.

The Big Green outshot the Bulldogs, 29 to 12, after receiving 22 penalty corners to Bryant's four. Danby led the Black and Gold with four shots, while Walton finished right behind her with three attempts.

The Bulldogs return to action when they host Vermont at Brown University on Friday, September 25 at 11 a.m.
