Freshmen, Perrymen and Newbill help lead Bulldogs to victory Friday morning

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University field hockey team finds their second win of the season, beating Vermont, 2-1, with the help of freshmen, Emily Perryman (Lebanon, N.H.) and Victoria Newbill (Wilton, Maine).

Perryman put the Bulldogs (2-7) on the board first, after dribbling into the circle and firing a shot into the left side of the cage. The score marks the second goal of the season for the midfielder.

The Bulldogs advanced the lead to two, when senior forward Bronwyn Walton (North Vancouver, B.C.) carried the ball down the right side and crossed it in front of the cage, where Newbill was there to finish with a shot low into the goal.

The Catamounts (2-7) attempted to climb their way back into the game, notching a goal late in the match, but it proved to be too late, scoring in the last minute of regulation. Molly Higgins went unassisted, finishing a scramble in the circle into the back of the Bulldogs' cage with 21 seconds remaining.

The Black and Gold finished the game with 13 shots, while the Catamounts tallied 10. Freshman keeper Marissa Elizardo (New Wales, Pa.), recorded five saves and the visiting goalie Lena Benwood logged four.

Junior Victoria Danby (Lancaster, Mass.) led the Bulldogs with four shots, placing three on net. The Catamounts attack was led by Lauren Tucker, finishing with one of three attempts on frame.

The Bulldogs return to play tomorrow, Sept. 26, at noon, when the Black and Gold host the Maine Black Bears at Brown University.
