Bulldogs fall to Black Bears Saturday afternoon at Brown University

SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The Bryant University field hockey team was held scoreless by Maine Saturday afternoon, losing 8-0, at Brown University.

In a tough battle for the Bulldogs (2-7-0), the Black Bears (7-2-0) dominated offensively, scoring a trio of goals in the first half and adding five more in the second.

The first score came in the 4th minute, when Danielle Aviani found Casey Crowly, who dribbled across the circle and finished for the Black Bears.

Maine advanced their lead off of a penalty corner taken by Nicole Sevey. Sevey passed to Libby Riedl for the stick stop, setting up Katie Bingle for the score into the bottom left of the cage.

In the 26th minute, the Black Bears took a 3-0 lead after Riedl passed to Sevey on the set up for the Crowley finish.

Crowley found her third goal of the match and fourth for the Black Bears, after cleaning up a scramble in the Bulldogs' circle.

Sydney Veljacic was next to strike for Maine, driving home the next two scores for the Black Bears and advancing the lead to 6-0. Off a penalty corner, Riedl settled the ball for Veljacic, who dribbled by a Bryant defender and finished between the pipes. The midfielder recorded her second goal, after Ella Mosky carried the ball down the right side and crossed it in front of the cage, where Veljacic received the pass, shot and scored.

After tallying three assists on the game, Riedl found the back of the net, scoring off a two on one situation, when Bryant goalkeeper Marissa Elizardo (New Wales, Pa.) came off her line to contest the shot.

In the last minute of play, Jessica Skillings fired home the eighth and final goal of the match, solidifying Maine's 8-0 victory.

Elizardo finished the day with nine saves, while Maine's keeper Emily Corbett finished with one.

The Black and Gold return to play on Friday, October 2nd, when they travel to take on Holy Cross at 7 p.m.
